Found this setup on Facebook market place with next to no info. I'd never seen the ampeg cab before so I looked it up. Apparently, it is an SE-412, and they came loaded with the G12-65 speakers, which I'd never head before.

Made an offer, seller accepted and just got home with it. The cab appears to be plywood, assuming birch, but is front loaded and also separated into an upper and lower compartment, neat. The speakers are in fact, the G12-65.

Head and cab are both very dirty but appear to be in excellent shape. The speakers seem to be big and loose sounding, cool crunch for rock and roll but not my thing.

This blue voodoo head sounds even better than the BV60 I got last month. Interested heads, may pursue modding this one.

Anyone have any more insight on these speakers?

If they are the normal G12 65 from 78-83, they are killer with Marshall’s; and in my experience with every amp I’ve thrown at them. There are different versions but I’ve had a bunch and all have the same mid/low response with differences in the high end; some darker vs brighter. Like a higher powered GB is how I’d describe them. Find the date codes and see when these were made...Celestion also has a 65 that is unrelated to the original but they are more recent and sound nothing alike, I think they were put into lower priced amps as oem.

You mentioned ‘loose’ sounding? Then you may have the 444 bass cone 65s... not bad but not as tight as the 1777 lead cones.

Understood, seems like there were a lot of differences within the G12-65 Model. I'll take a look tonight and see what I have.

I had to remove the handle to check out the speakers. I tried to remove a speaker and that thing seems glued to the baffle, which I hope isn't the case.

They really all have the same tone with the Bass cones being less tight and some versions darker; but the dark versions can sound exactly like the brighter 3120s(I have these) by turning up the presence or treble. I had a 79 cab next to an 83, just had to brighten the 83 up to match the 79 perfectly.

Here's what we got. These puppies are glued to the baffle, so Now I need to figure out the safest way to get them out of the cab.

Man those are some really nice speakers I used to record thrash metal with those.

You should remove the frontal panel with the grillcloth, and unscrew the speakers.

Like I said, speakers are glued to the baffle. Removing the screws does not free them.

They could be stuck with an old gasket that’s acting like glue; I had that once in an old front loaded Fender cab.
Either way score, they are great speakers. Try them in a rear loaded cab and see if they tighten up for you. They might be worn out if they are super loose. Mine aren’t V30 tight but tight enough...

I tried to gently pry them with a flathead, but they didn't seem to want to move and I didn't want to bend the frame. Thinking I'll need heat to loosen up the glue if that is what's holding it

Have you tried a putty knife? Try slipping it between the speaker frame and the baffle and working it all the way around.

No, but I will tonight! I also have some razors and fingernail polish remover to give the ol' college try.

Yeah, I'd try to avoid using heat on a speaker if possible. It might just be that the speaker has adhered to the black paint that the baffle is painted with.

SO, I went home and put a couple amps through the cab, since I've been reading that these speakers require some power to come alive.

I get it now. They actually sound great. They're not as tight as a v30 or K100, but they don't sound flubby with some serious volume on them.

Recorded these with an SM57 and I personally think they sound great! Using my same demo riff from the other thread

Man, after a few very loud days with these speakers, they are REALLY growing on me.

Here's a couple more amps through the cab. The Splawns seem to mesh really well with it. Loving the metallic clank of the palm mutes. The speakers are much tighter than I originally thought. Not V30 tight, but they're close. Would actually probably mesh nicely with a v30

I don’t hear ANYTHING wrong with those clips. G12-65’s are killer speakers, one of my favorite. If they’re growing on you, keep rolling with those and you’ll most like grow to love them.

I'm definitely a fan! I wonder how they would do in a different cab. Half tempted to pull them and load them into my cjm 900 1960A, as I'm not a fan of the T75's in that thing.
