Welp, I've been the proud owner of this little beauty since yesterday, and it's already a full-on
affair...
Charvel necks FTMFW!!!
So I picked it up yesterday morning, all excited and happy, and when I opened the box, the guitar was in great shape, but the pickguard was covered in stickers (which I removed before I left the FedEx parking lot!) and the guitar was in DIRE need of a very thorough cleaning and a setup. Ordinarily, I'd have happily done it myself, but I had to help a buddy fix his computer, then go to hang out with some friends at their band practice and sit in with some other friends at an open jam night last night, so I just didn't have the time, and I REALLY wanted the guitar ready to show off at the jam.
I know if I take it to my regular guy, Luthier Wizard Allen Chester, he'll do an amazing job on it, but I would've been without the guitar I just got for a week, so I tried my secondary guy, also a very good tech and luthier, but he was closed for the weekend. So having previously talked to and seen this tech that's been at our local GC for a few years now, and having heard that he does good work, I dropped it off with him, asked him to de-smegmatize & set it up, and left to help my buddy fix his computer.
Maybe an hour later, I get a call from the guy at GC and he tells me in a very sheepish voice... "We have a little problem with your guitar... I took the neck off to do a truss rod adjustment, and it was a super-tight fit in the neck pocket, and as I was taking the neck off, the paint chipped at the neck pocket by the 21st fret". Naturally, my heart sank at the news that my beautiful new guitar, that I had only had in my possession for a few HOURS, had just gotten fucked up by this guy I had never dealt with before.
I asked him "HOW BAD?!", to which he replies "I'm not happy with it, and I don't think you're going to be happy with it, either". I go from

in about half a second, and my buddy and I hop in my truck and head up to GC to inspect the damage and possibly beat someone to death. Luckily (?), the chip, about half the size of a dime, came out in one piece, and wasn't very noticeable when he put it back in place. The guy was genuinely sick about it and incredibly apologetic, stating that he really dug my guitar and wanted to do a thorough job, and that in 3 years, this had NEVER happened to him, and he wouldn't charge me for the setup and would do whatever it takes to make it right, but he's not really a finish guy, although he could glue the chip back into place. I was a little relieved that it wasn't any worse than it was, and told him to go ahead and glue it back into place, that I would take it to my other guy have a look at it on Monday and see what he could do to help blend the crack around the chip into the finish and seal it so it doesn't come out again, and he offered to pay for it, which was about as fair as I could ask I guess, given the circumstances, so that's where we are now.
Here's a pic of my shiny new candy tangerine owie...
If anyone out there has any finish chip repair experience/tips, I'm all ears!
The good news is that other than this colossal fuckup, the guitar is AWESOME! It's gorgeous, plays every bit as good, if not better than I had expected and sounds really good, although I'm gonna have to give the Dimarzios a bit more time before I'm sure if I'm gonna keep 'em or not.
It was a HUGE hit at the open jam that night, and my buddy Jonathan, who's a SMOKIN' player raved about it after I let him play it for a few songs, and wants to borrow it to record some tracks on his band November's next record. Even after all the drama, it's all I hoped it would be, although I think I may be developing a Charvel addiction, and highly doubt this will be the last one I'll eventually own!
