Big Het & Metallica fan in general and former ESP Custom owner. Mainly only play Gibson Custom Shop Historic Reissue Les Pauls... so I thought it time for some more metal oriented axes. Hence, these two fine specimens. Sorry no outdoor pics as it has been raining a lot... and I don't have a proper stand to hold these sorta shapes anyway. Accident waiting to happen.

These are the Japan Custom Shop models and they both feel and play like it. The quality is apparent as soon as you get them in your hands. Fretwork is amazeballs. All fret ends are rounded, smooth, polished. Checked all the frets on both with my fret rocker... zero issues... perfect. Score. Both intonate dead-nuts on with no real tweaking needed. The satin finish is the big winner here... it makes the necks feel great, fast, and effortless. It will get shiny from use over time... but it looks killer and the feel is amazing.

The necks are a little thinner than I thought they'd be with Het being a big guy... but they are indeed as advertised the "thin U" shape. The 12 fret inlays on both look killer in-person. Much better than any pics I've seen. They are indeed mother of pearl, not plastic inlays. The cherry on the sundae is the ebony boards on both. Raw, unfinished, uncoated, unlaquered jet black smooth tight grained ebony. I'm stickler about ebony boards. Many past CS ESP I've seen with coated, lacquered ebony boards (not just high polished)... but these are right up to my definition of perfect. All uniformly jet black, no streaks, no fish eyes, zero imperfections. They don't looked dyed either which only further impresses.

Both guitars are pretty near identical spec-wise apart from the shapes and inlays. The Vulture has Gotoh locking tuners and Schaller locking tuners on the Snake. Not sure why the change. Both are pretty lightweight too... both are under 8.5 pounds.

Anywho... Yes... there are lots of choices for $4K each... but if you're a Hetfield fan, and you like the specs, I'd suggest checking one or both out. Also, worth mentioning as a big former Jackson Custom Shop user, these are head-n-shoulders above anything I've played recently in the last few years from Jackson. Better woods, fit and finish, no cosmetic issues, no uneven frets or dead spots way up the neck near the heel.

Man those are great! I have hit the age where $3-4K doesn't;t seem unreasonable. If I were to get a Snakebyte, it'd HAVE to be the ESP and not LTD. Nice haul.

Gotta be honest, I normally don't find the black Snakebyte very attractive (though I have the white LTD and it's my favorite guitar), but that's very nice. Good haul man, my LTD Snakebyte is incredible, I imagine the ESP is even better.

Geeezus dude, you don't fuck around.... Grats! Post some clips!

Awesome purchases!!! Till the day we die, all of us diehard Metallica fans will always associate black explorer shapes with Hetfield riffs like Angus and his SG or Yngwie with a Strat. I really dig the Snakebyte shape and think it was a great way to capture the Explorer shape legally. :)

I can just imagine how tight those are on the palm mutes and how great they sound!

I’ve actually been thinking of picking up some old beat to shit Gibson Explorer lately.
:D

I always associate white explorers with Hetfield  I just wished they stayed white, I should play mine more but man that nasty tooth yellow it turned to just doesn't do it for me.

That’s nice man. I like those shapes a lot. Fun spin on some classics. And ESP makes killer stuff. Doesn’t get nicer than those two.

Sweet!! I hear you about the ebony boards... those look just about perfect. I love the ESP logo on the headstock, too. Is that actually raised up, maybe even made of metal, or does it just look 3-D? Either way, you've got yourself a mighty fine set of siblings there!! Congrats!!

And yeah, it sucks that Jackson just isn't quite what they used to be. I hope they can get back to their glory days, especially after hearing all the encouraging things about Charvel. Personally, my Standard Series ESP Horizon FR-27 took a lot of the things I loved about the Charvel/Jackson Fusion and made them just perfect. Can't believe ESP dropped that model after only one year (at least in the states).

Congratulations, again, on your most excellent additions!!

Super badass man, congrats.
$8k, wow, awesome to go out and get something like that you really want, love to hear that stuff.

Thanks peeps.

Thanks!

Yes indeed... The ESP logo is actually metal... I think polished aluminum. Before buying I thought it might be plastic or something similar. But it's metal... raised up 3D like a logo on a car. I believe the idea came from James and his love of hot rod cars... the logo, satin paint, etc. Really cool too in person. Much better than I thought it looked in pics.

And I coincidentally love the control layout. 2 volumes, no tone... and everything far out of the way when you pick. Nice.

Tone controlz??? We don' need no steeeenking tone controlz!! ;) I've got more than a few wired up that way, too. :)

I'll bet you're right about the logo coming from James' love of hot rods. That's so cool, such a great idea!!

Congrats, really nice guitars.
I love esp custom shop stuff.

Yeah I do too but it is like two different Hetfields. When I think white guitar, I think about the first three albums, clean shaven Het with ripped jeans and white shoes, yelling and aggresive playing fast metal. The black guitar I think about the Black Album and "everything black" approach with unbelievable tone, chugging riffs, etc. Can't go wrong with either!

Man those are serious kick ass gtrs--I LUV the V--Rock On Sir
