Earlier this year in April, we went to Japan and during the one the one day that I had 6-8 hours to do whatever I wanted, I of course went Guitar shop hopping in Tokyo! I was looking for something in particular but, of course wanted to cram as much Guitar sightseeing as possible too. I found 2 guitars under the budget I set for myself that I would have been happy with but, I passed on them because neither were the model I wanted to find in Japan (one was the same brand, different model with EMG’s—sounded great though and the other was more of a ooh good deal I should get it because it sounds good—Edwards LP Custom). I did of course find an alternate brand and model that I LOVED for DOUBLE my budget that I also passed on for monetary reasons. SIX months later and I STILL haven’t been able to get that Guitar out of my head! So I made a decision... I sold my AxeFX II and a few other things and bought this MINTY fresh—you absolutely can’t tell it’s not new... Ibanez J. Custom RG8570BB-NTF you see here:

It arrived today after NINE days of sitting in customs and me REALLY starting to freak out after day 5 or so (because of its Indian rosewood fretboard and CITES!).

For those of you not familiar with what a J. Custom is, think higher end than “regular” MIJ Ibanez signature models which are rather nice, think custom Tom Anderson or Suhr and you’ll be in the right ballpark. This one has recessed knobs, flamed maple binding around its fretboard and really nicely finished fret ends which are sort of a J. Custom trademark (1st Guitar I ever saw with fret end finishing that nice was another J. Custom I bought about 10 years ago).

This particular one is part of a limited run of 20 for the Japanese market only with what they call a Buckeye Burl top and a REALLY nice matte satin finish.

Ibanez Japan has a really nice website for it. I’ll go find it again and edit the link in. Found it:

It SINGS through an amp at low volumes. Tomorrow I get to TURN IT UP :D

Holy smokes, that is gorgeous. Congrats.
I think I remember your story about the trip, GAS is a ruthless pain in the ass.

Thats a beautiful guitar Ive got the other one and love it so much!! Its a guitar Ive held on this one because its a great guitar!!

whoa! the cream pups really look killer against that wood.

 Wow very nice.

Is that Burl top? Love that look. Seems very nice.

What a great looking guitar! I have never tried a J-Custom but I have heard that they are every bit as high quality as a boutique builder. I think Steve Henning had a few that looked killer as well. Congratulations Ivan!!

Dude, you're always picking up monster guitar after monster guitar. Ibanez makes so many obscure random and one off J-Customs, it's nice to see one brought over. How does the Caparison hold up to it?

suhweeet! I shudder to think what the price tag is on that baby! Thing is a work of art, though.

HNMFGD!!

They’re REALLY different in amplified tone and neck shape. Whatever value Caparison uses for it’s volume pots WORKS. I have to turn the Ibanez pot a lot more to get that volume backed off sound. So that aspect goes to Caparison. Fit and finish goes to Ibanez, it’s just superb. Tone is a almost a tie (I wouldn’t have bought the Caparison if it didn’t sound really good), very slight edge to the Ibanez but, that might be because the Tone Zone is my favorite pickup.

'Tis a beautiful J Custom! Many congrats to you! I've owned a bunch of them over the past 10 years and they are wonderful guitars. Glad you got one with the lo pro Edge on it. Well done! These are simply beautiful guitars.

J Customs are awesome guitars. I have had a couple, top notch build quality, playability is effortless and they sound great.
