Don't do these too often.
I've had the hots for the Roughneck since I first saw one.
Was able to grab a new one for a killer deal from NStuff. They have one left. Hit me up for deets if anyone is interested. Highly recommended, if you want old school Strat, meets modern playability and sound, in something that's not quite like anything else you've played.

Took it in last night. Needed a good setup after the trip. Dialed it in today after work. Diiiiiiig it! For reals. It's something else, in all the right ways.
Surprised that it has more of an old Strat vibe than I anticipated. Feels more like my Fender CS Tele (that I absolutely love), than a more modern feeling Anderson Icon. Not near as modern as what I thought it would be, considering the specs. Yet, it does the heavy shreddy stuff fantastically. It does plinky cleans, singing solos, shreds, and it grinds. Gonna be honeymooning hard for a long time with this one.
Looking forward to comparing this to my Modern Satin Flame, that I've enjoyed for years.
Couple clips below.
Expect to see some stuff in the Emporium.
Gotta make up the $ and space...

Exploring the sounds thru an SLO:

First play, before setup, thru a Spark Mini. It'll thrash!:

so sick dude! Thornley is a friggin monster player. Always wanted to try one of those to see if I dug the neck. I typically like some chonk in there and the V is interesting. Love the pickup config too. Well done and killer playing too!

Yeah man, there's not much he can't do.
I was concerned about the V. I typically don't like the V shape. I read over and over how this is people's favorite neck, so gave it a go.
Glad I did!
It's not a typical V neck, like from Schecter, Knaggs or anyone else. It fills the hand just right. It's .875"-.970", but doesn't feel as baseball bat as those specs would indicate. Very much a happy medium between all the sustain and fullness of a big neck, and the playability and comfort of something like the Suhr Modern. I like it way more than the Pete Thorn Strat neck, and as much as my fav Anderson and CS Tele necks.

Nice, not quite as big as I like but not bad for a Suhr. They are usually pretty thin

Nothing thin about it, but not overwhelmingly huge either. Really close to my CS Tele, and my buddy's old Anderson Icon, which was the 60s vibe + some amount I forget. Fills the hand nicely, more than most guitars Ive owned.

Overwhelmingly huge is what I look for in a guitar neck lol

I swear like 20% of my "tone" that people seem to appreciate is literally just picking guitars with large necks because my hands are huge 😂
There's something to that, for sure. I realized my guitars with the bigger necks, LP, Tele, Strat...have more sustain, more meat to the sound.
I'm moving away from thinner necks and Floyd-type bridges. They kill the tone.

There you go bobby, come to the dark side

We have cookies, and it's a lot easier to get good sounding recordings

They 100% do kill the sound. Is it possible to get an amazing tone with a floyd and a tiny neck? I mean, yeah, its possible but it's like starting out 1st and 28 instead of 1st and 10, when good tones are getting a first down.

It just makes every step of the process more difficult in the end, if the goal is making a great tone

Ha! I'm there. If only I had the chops you guys have. But I'll be happy exploring the tones in a more subtle way.
I'd love to hear this guitar in your hands.
I think you'd dig it.

I absolutely love Suhrs, I just have never had the cash on hand to justify owning one tbh

The setups are always immaculate on them straight out of the box - the only thing that's been hit or miss for me has been the pickups, but IIRC the thornley has the aldrich pups right? Which are the best humbucker suhr makes IMO. Fantastic sounding tones, very similar to both the tonenerd roxy and the duncan sh-14

I've never played one of the thornley roughnecks but it sounds great man!

This one has Aldrich HBs. TBH, they werent my fav when I've heard them in other people's guitars. They seemed too thick, imo. I much preferred the SSH+.
It freaking rocks in this guitar! @scottosan has recently become a fan, using them in his fantastic builds. He even wondered if Suhr has changed their recipe for the Aldrich, in a recent discussion, as he wasn't previously a fan, like myself.
I think he was more excited about me getting this guitar than I was. He definitely helped push me over the edge into buying, along with @Nitrobattery , with his awesome clips and glowing review. That dude can play, has a stable of Suhrs, and told me the Thornley is possibly his favorite neck, ever.

That's what everyone says, that the thornley neck is the best suhr carve

Seems pretty consistently true though now and again you can find a slim taper where the body is resonant enough to make up the difference.
