The brown truck just dropped off my USACG Roasted Alder body (3lb 6oz ) and roasted maple neck (Jumbo SS frets).

Time to lock myself away from the kids and wife this weekend and get this thing started. It will have a 1984 model Original Floyd Rose, HSS (Aldrich/ML/ML) configuration, nitro sonic blue finish (reliced). Neck will get a hand rubbed tru oil treatment

Love tru oil. I've done a few necks with that shit. Patience is key.

 First couple treatments of Tru-Oil and this baby is looking pretty dark

Alright, neck is done. 6 coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil, finished and buffed and Birchwood Casey Gu Stock wax ala Ernie Ball Music Man style. R3 Nut and some Sperzels.

Got 2 coats of sonic blue nitro in before the humidity gets too high and rains tonight

What's the secret to getting the tru-oil finish so perfect?

I've tru-oiled a couple necks and while it works good, I just can't seem to get it to look as good as some others..

That neck is gorgeous.

The key is to get it on and off as quickly as possible. I use paper towels for both the application and the wipe down. I put a decent amount on the first application. It's pretty easy to se where you are applying. I leave it on no more than 45 seconds, then wipe it off with a new piece of paper towel. I then let it sit in front of a shop fan for about 2-3. You may want to go longer if you are not comfortable. Humidity can influence the time. I always handle it with nitrile gloves so that my sweaty hands dont goop it up. I will then repeat the process. I will then give it a once over with #0000 steal wool every 2nd coat followed by a rub down with some denim. Make sure to get all of the shavings off with a paper towel and a magnet if you have one. I'll just sit with the neck while watching TV rubbing it with denim. Dont worry about it looking dull at this point, It's about it being level and consistent, not shiny. After six coats I can see it getting pretty shiny. I let it sit for a day. This is when I give it a last steel wool treatment. You don't have to go after it. modest pressure and a constistant dull finish is what you are after. It should feels pretty low resistance with your hand right now. This is when I do the BC gun wax and buff it to a nice shine. It will be super slick at this point.

Awesome, thanks man!

I love that wood grain and true-oil finish. Both look awesome. I want to do a project like this also.

Yeah, I've also been considering a parts build for a while....

I know some of you aren't big into relics, but I've always wanted on, and being that this is my first DIY Nitro paint job, that I knew it didn't need to be perfect. So, it's all together, intonated, tweeked etc. I started the relic'ing but part of the process for me is doing it while assembled. It doesn't make sense to relic parts that would otherwise be covered by a pickgaurd. I have to give props top the guys at USACG. This is my 2nd neck from them and they have been spot on out of the box. As for the roasted alder, I'm sold. It's lighter (weight), darker color, and this guitar is very lively and feels just right. I took the picks late last night, so there were a few screws that weren't flush and one of my locking nuts was crooked, but since fixed. I also need a few more trem springs.
