First Ibanez with some aesthetic choices I've liked in a long time. But man, I cannot deal with whatever tone and playing style this is anymore. I hated it the first time I heard it and as soon as I hear it I turn off. It makes me hate.

How do people like this sound and want to copy and replicate? Is this just me becoming an old man? Because it just doesn't sound good to me at all in anyway.

It’s just the music industry doing what it always does. Polyphia came along and those guys did something novel with guitar music, and the music industry said “hey if this new thing is good once, well then four hundred million times must be better” and we’ve had slidey-tappy playing, in-between-pickup-position-selected guitars going into highly compressed glassy light breakup tones over rap beats ever since.

That literally sounds like some cheesy Steve vai at the beginning
Am I deaf??

You’re getting old
As in... you think it sounds cool? The tone is fucking terrible and the playing style makes me cringe. If my son starts getting into this stuff he is out of my house. This is the new "get a haircut" to me. Full generation gap.

But what depresses me, is every other generation didn't like the next, but to was like Elvis to the Beatles to Zeppelin to VH to GnR to Metallica to Grunge/Alternative to Meshuggah to something. Now it's just totally unlikable.

I liked it, it is pretty cool to my ears, but I am only 13. And I smokes a lot, ton, of weed.

I went back and watched it a couple more times and it reminds me of Richie Blackmore when Deep Purple “In Rock” came out, that’s the way he was on stage.

He even has Richie’s Stratocaster sound! 🎸

As a 24 yr old I'm also sick of hearing that tone everywhere 😂

The solo after it was decent but yeah that nintendo plinky pseudo acoustic with slap bass can die already

And you kids get the hell off my lawn

let em do their own thing and step aside. you had your time in the sun. :ROFLMAO:

don't get me wrong, i'm not listening to it, it really ain't for me either.
However, i never thought i'd see STEVE VAI's influence of all people showing up in this new school stuff. You can't really hate on that.
They're trying to bring back shred (again) and put a modern spin on it.

Don't worry, You're still going to be able to impress some old mama in the dark, empty, bar with your crusty old riffs. :p

is it something im going to listen to daily, and then try to incorporate that style into my playing?? Its not, but i was never into the shreddy 80's Vai'ish stuff to begin with. Do i watch this and get so offended that im in a depression making posts about it and fearing my kid is going to enjoy it?? im not. I think its cool the trend with this younger generation went the way of 80s shred with their own twist on it to make it their own, the same way VH pushed what Page was doing, who then guys like Vai pushed what Eddie was doing. Of all the guitar trends that have come along in the last 40 years, i would think this new Polyphia trend would be the least offensive to aging people, but it seems to be the opposite.

Why do i get the feeling that if "1985 guy" played this exact same thing with a Charvel, we would be saying how great it is that they still have the fire and their playing is evolving and we would be celebrating it?

Welcome to 2023.

I saw them live in 2024; great show IME.

Compared to half of the stuff I hear linked on here, that was a reprieve.

Sounds like a video game or anime theme or something.

The tone and style have saturated the community of late, that's for certain.

I don't spend much time, if any, on social media anymore, so I have escaped a lot of the latest trends.

I personally enjoy more of a jazz/fusion/funk feel in music, so this didn't immediately strike me as "awful" except for the tone is so damn plinky.

I can respect the technical ability, but don’t ever listen to it unless it’s posted here. I’m just glad Guitar is still being evolved and used. Maybe some of that type clean, slappy vibe type guitar will be incorporated into pop songs and get more people interested in guitar.

It doesn’t make me depressed, it makes me violently cringe. Probably the first time I heard that bad plinky thing it was a bit cringe, but seeing all the copy cats is even worse. Now I’ve had it.

Alright, I hear you. I won’t kick my son out. I will buy him an oversized cashmere turtleneck and encourage him to play the in between pickups through a plug-in. Make sure it sounds clean, but has no natural tube compression. He can then make cringe melodies that sound like they have been chopped together and have been influenced by modern top 40 girl music.
