my tastes are slowly turning back towards the old marshall sounds, which made me pick up a guitar in the first place. My favorite amps at the moment are the modern sounding amps with that old school marshall growl.

Like your Wizard and CCV ?

Ah my soul and tone guidance guru, yes the sands of time have brought me to a different place. A place of un-polished reckless abandon of pushed tubes of glass and filiments bringing the timeless tonal bliss that only the Doctor of Loud can bring. Endless treks ended fruitless time and time again while the answer was always there.

Riddle me this oh Sage of tone......................

Someone on the Line 6 forums had that Passion and Warfare NAILED with a PODXT. I mean, it was dead on.

I like Marshalls, but when I did a A/B between a JCM 800 and a Wizard MC the 800 got crushed really bad.

Yes, I like Marshall and Fender tones but I'm a Vox guy.

My amp GAS is fixated on an AC100 MkII or a JMI 100 into a matching 4x12 loaded with Celestion Alnico Golds to bring on full bore tube goodness. :dunno:

This would do though:

Rob, Are you gigging the JVM? Also when are you playing around the B More?

I had a JCM 800 2203 and am really trying to get something again like a Cameron, Wizard or a CCV etc. Nothing beats them in a band setting and the roar that no other amp gets. I'm getting a Herbert and if I don't like that back to Marshall.

I spent some time A/B'ing an 800 halfstack and a Mark IV halfstack last weekend, and IMO the Mark IV was the winner. More articulate growly goodness. The Marshall was awesome though and had the Boogie beat for lower gain crunch and that authentic growl, but the Mark IV's lead channel is just a perfect sound when dialed correctly and with a traditional 412.

For me, I feel like I'm missing some feel whenever I play a stock 800. Same with the reissues, SLP, plexi's I've played.

Just curious but how loud was the 800?

The MKIV and 800 are polar opposites for guitar tone though, so I can see how someone could be blown away by one and not the other.
We had them both up to ear-bleed levels for a minute or two. But most of the comparison was done at pretty loud levels. The 800 rips, but I thought the Mesa was just a more balanced sound. Very saturated but remained tight, with just the right amount of chewy warmth.

We had the IV dialed in so it could breath. It sounded very open and wasn't the typical fuzz-box muffled metal tone that many get with that amp. The cool thing is that my buddy owns both so he doesn't have to choose between them. Oh, and we tried each with a bunch of guitars too.

I'm going to try to make this show at the Recher.

To the OP, couldn't agree more. Love Marshalls. Always wanted an early 80's 800 w/ vertical inputs. It's the sound that started it all for me.

Whatever, this type of stuff is funny to me, because I had both the 2203 & the Einstein at the same time & I don't even have to think twice to know which one is a better amp. The only Marshall that sounds sick is the Plexi, the rest are just fine, but nothing that much impressive.

I know exactly where you are coming from...
Serously I sometimes forget and then I put an album on with that classic marshall roar and I get goose bumps.. its the reason why I play guitar (that and Angus and Malcom Young) it just sounds so right to me.
I feel the same way, i love the marshall tone, for years i got away from it and played rectifiers and other amps and i missed it and im back to a marshall again.
