Thanks to a lead provided on TGP I picked up this 1982 Gibson Les Paul Custom. I've been searching for a guitar from my birth year (1982) for a while and when this came up I immediately sprang into action. The deal was done through Craigslist/Paypal which had red flags all over it but luckily the seller was a stand up guy and I received the guitar safe and sound.
It's in really nice shape with normal wear for a used guitar from '82. It still has the original frets which don't have a whole lot of wear on them at all and won't need a dress for a while. All I had to do was clean her up, polish the frets, change the strings, adjust the action, and it was ready to go.
The weight is about average for an LPC. The neck humbucker is a Tim Shaw PAF and the bridge humbucker is an old 80's Seymour Duncan JB. I like the Shaw but, thought first hand experience, I've learned that I'm not a JB kind of guy and will be looking to replace it. Also, the tone seemed a little dark to me and has me wondering if the pots in this thing are 300k or 500k. There's no stamp on them other than a serial number. I have an '81 335 Dot which came with 300k's and sounded dark. I switched them out for 500k's and it totally transformed the guitar. I may just order new 500k pots and redo the wiring completely as it's a little messy. The pots are also mounted to that Gibson plate which I'm not a huge fan of, either.
Anyway, I really like the guitar so far and, with a little bit of tweaking and the right pickups, I think I'll make it into the perfect birth year tone monster.
