Got a Boogie Quad preamp to run through my 2 90 and man is it killer. I'm still in the honeymoon phase but I am sure digging it. I'm looking for a reasonable priced rack FX unit and have heard some good things about the G Major. Thoughts?

Congrats, I love that preamp, I think its the best sounding pre Boogie ever released

The G-Major 2 is really rad. Lexicon makes a couple rack mounted fx units for pretty cheap too.

Haven't played through one of those in forever but I remember really digging those.

Under $500 you could take a look at the GSP1101. Often you can find the unit and floorboard for $400 give or take. Update it to c63 and it's a potent unit.

The G-Major II is a good enough unit, but I´d have to say its greatest selling point is that it´s very simple to use. Choose routing, toggle blocks on-off, tweak a parameter here and there - no fuss. Sound is OK and tweaking is very limited, but as a meat-and-potatoes processor it definitely gets the job done.

Congrats, I love mine. Keep toying with selling it, but a four channel mark series boogie all tube preamp? Hard to beat and sounded better IMHO than a Triaxis. Regarding fx, what do you need? That's what would point me towards certain processors on a budget... if you need intelligent harmonies, hard to beat a G Major II *or* if you don't want to mess with a rack AND pedalboard, the TC Nova system will handle the basics in a pedal format.

If you don't need intelligent harmonies, the G Major is good, if you don't mind a little less user friendliness but a lot cheaper, the Rocktron Intellifex is always an idea too.

Are you able to run both channels on the Quad simultaneously?
You can but in the Early models,Love Mine too (1986) do the simultaneous Combination with a Rockman Midi Octopus..

Congratulations!

Classic Preamp and I love mine! I also run the GMajor in tandem - It has 2 relays which you can use to activate 2 of the channels of the quad - HOWEVER...they are a little bit funny....for some reason they dont always change the channel when I want and you also cant get the relays to repeat the same setting across two patches...probably fixable with a firmware update somewhere along the line. I use the GMajor for the delays and reverb....and sometimes the parametric EQ for thrash tones.....works well!

Tonewise, its a good combo, does for me, but I also have a Boss GT10 which I use for effects in front of the Preamp.

I use the Quad with a 3:95 so a little different from your 2:90 but wont be far off. I also use EL34s in the outer slots of my poweramp and I think it works well, cause I can switch to all EL34s on the fly.

In terms of the preamp....I've played with this for a long time and obviously there are compromises....I set the MkIIc channel for amazing cleans (and they are!)....now that affects the MKIIc distorted tones. So I compensate by slamming it with an OD pedal and that can be overcome.

The Mk III channel I set for uber-thrash tones and dont really use the rythym part (through you can tease out some nice leads, on Ry2, again using some OD pedal).

For the heavier tones, on the normal EQ, crank the highs, keep the mids at 5 or 6, and then keep the bass fairly low. Pull all the switches. Then scoop the mids and crank the bass on the graphic EQ.

I have mine set up as follows:

Ry1: Fender clean
Ld1: Heavy Mk2c tones (boosted with OD pedal)
Ry2: Dont use
Ld2: Scooped MkIII thrash

I also use another patch for EL34 - cleans (ry1), and then I use a Crunch box into that....gives you a nice further option.

Im sure you'll enjoy it.....Ive had mine for the best part of 10 years, never really felt inclined to sell it (mmm apart from a fling I had with an Engl Savage 120)....

The GMajor2 is a great multi effects unit, and the 2 also has an intelligent harmonizer. IMHO it sounds better than 1 (and it won't break on ya either :P)

I have a GMajor hooked into my 2:90 Triaxis rig and its really performed well for me. I'm not a heavy effects guy but the effects that I do use sound nice and reasonably transparent.

i love my G-Major. I used a lot of different rack mount effects in the past. for years I was sworn to my Alesis Quadraverb but when it finally broke down, I went through a lot of units before settling on the G-Major.
It's a great unit for transparent tone. It really enhanced the sound of your amp as opposed to coloring it. I used to run it with my Randall MTS amps, and now with the EVH 50-watt head. Kicks ass with all these amps. I'm actually thinking of getting a second one.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the G-Major 2 may be the way to go...Although the G-System looks killer as well. The price is a bit more than I wanted to pay though :/

FYI I got a word from an insider that the guts of a G-Major is exactly the same as the G-system, only difference is the G-System obviously has more stuff in it, but they are apparently the same electronics.

The 4 cable method is the main difference (for what I'm looking for). Plus I dig the floorboard.
