Stop making me GAS for one of these again!

i try to keep a very minimalist set up, but having owned half a dozen of these in the past, i KNOW how much better i can sound with one. I used to put it in the loop of my mark 4, just to fine sculpt the mid range, and if anything it was able to quiet things down / tighten them up with the way i was setting it. i kept the level even with mark IV, and didn't use it to boost output or volume, just frequencies. I never would consider it a noisey unit, even though it certainly has that reputation on the web.

so the empress isn't anywhere near as good, eh? rats... i was thinking about trying it, since its a bit cheaper.

It doesn’t matter, Furman, Audio Arts, TC, Hell, even Rane etc all made a “clone” of the Furman, some have 3 bands, some 4, but they all work the same and sound the same. Ibanez had a parametric in their 9 series pedal format that’s blue, cool, but not as cool as the rack units. Instant 80s metal tone. Ratt, Dokken, Stryper, Night Ranger, Icon, etc...
Imo the PQ-3 and 1140 have enough tonal differences to warrant having both, but I can see it being redundant for some guys needs. I still gotta try the Audioarts and have a Boss PQ-4 coming soon.

They can be used for so much more than just 80’s tones. They can easily outdo the Fortin, Airis, VFE, Precision Drive etc as well for getting a super tight djent type sound or just as easily be used for getting a huge wall of sound. It’s like having a better version of almost every boost pedal I’ve owned in one unit. The only boost pedals I have now are a Klon Centaur and Coppersound Broadway. The other 100+ I’ve had are now obsolete

I wanted to like as much, but unfortunately no. It had this inherently cold, clinical quality to its sound no matter how you dial it in. I found other Empress pedals to also sound that way. I could though dial it in to sound very close to most of my favorite pedals at the time, but once I got the Furman it was game over for the Empress

I think this might be relevant here... juices the amp nicely!
