I had posted awhile ago asking about pedals to push my DSL100. Received a variety of responses ranging from bad monkey (which I've had in the past), 808, zakk od, ocd and more. I decided to try out the Suhr Riot because I wanted more gain and more crunch. My amp is ok using an SD-1 but it always feels a little weak unless I can really open it up...which at most smaller venues, I can't really push it volume-wise. I figured the Riot would give me the saturation I'm looking for at lower volumes but also can back off on the distortion knob and use it more as a boost when I'm able to turn up.
I've only had about an hour to mess with it at home on my board. It's a very transparent/organic sounding pedal on first listen. You can get mucho gain but it's articulate in that you can hear the notes of each string...something I wasn't getting with an SD-1. Whenever I play my rig at home, it always sounds insanely good. First real test will be friday night at rehearsal. I'm not gigging until the 21st and 22nd so I have until then to figure out if I want to keep it for the gig or sell it off and try something else. I can always get my money back on a pedal like this.
The other reason I wanted to try it and see if it'd work with my current setup is because if I do any travel gigs where they provide backline and the amp I'm given is a clean machine, I have a viable solution to that problem. That's few and far between but it's a nice option to have. Right now, on my board, I have it set like this:
Dist: about 10 o'clock
Voice: all the way to the left (although I really don't hear much difference in this switch)
Level: 3 o'clock
Tone: at around or a little before noon.
My amp is set on the green channel, crunch engaged, gain almost all the way up. I know that sounds like a lot but I'm thinking my tubes are more on the clean side because I've owned other DSLs that had more gain than this one has. I'm getting a pretty rocking tone though at home in this configuration. For cleans, I just roll my guitar volume down as I've been doing for awhile. If it works out, great! If not, on the selling block it goes and on to the next pedal.
