I thought i read on gearsluts there were pix (from the engineer) of him using a soldano hot rod 50 with a boss super overdrive, into a marshall cab.

Close. ;) It was a Boss Turbo Overdrive into a Super Lead 60. Go to page 9 of the GearSlutz link I posted above.

Good shit!

I have not had a Rat in the longest time but I got one when I had a L500XL in my Mockingbird. I wasn't going for Nuno but I've read/heard he uses it as a booster.

Yeah it's all there with the pedal mostly his pinched harmonics. He uses it into almost every amp he plays. The Rat pedal really enhances them, it's a very mid driven tone, I usually EQ the mids and treble back as well. He also uses greenbacks normally in his cabs to darken the mids some.

ProCo has reissued the whitefaced RAT with the original LM308 chip. I highly recommend it if you are going for Nuno's tone. It really shines into 2203 Marshall's but if you pull some gain out of your Friedman it should be spot on. Remember to roll your mids, treble and presence back some otherwise it will be harsh.

I don't think I want to nail. A lot of his tone comes from his right hand attack. I'd love to try it though.

Who wants to let me borrow their rat

On a side note i believe Mike Fortin is working with Nuno on a new version of his Randall head

Isn't he also working with Lynch??

I tend not to believe these rumours because i don't want to get my hopes up for something that will probably never happen.

Don't know if they are still working on it, but yes - the Headhunter.

It ain't pretty. You have been warned.

That pic is the old Lynch head from a few years ago. I'll be real surprised if the new one looks like that. That was all George's design and while trippy, it's not going to sell amps.

I really dig Nuno's playing and tone on all the Extreme stuff, but his tone on Hip Today from the 4th album just staggers me to this day.

Love Nuno's playing. I saw the Three Sides tour and it frikin rocked. "Waiting For The Punchline" has some great tunes like There Is No God, Cynical, Hip Today, Midnight Express.

Same here...that album has some of my all time favorite tones. He plugged straight into a cranked up vintage brown Vibroverb for that one...no overdrives. I remember that well because I subsequently tried to chase that tone with a reissue Vibroverb.

One of the constants in Nuno's tone regardless of what amp he is playing is his RAT overdrive pedal, the original one with the LM308 chip.
I still have a Rat pedal that I bought somewhere around '83 IIRC. It's just a black box with white lettering and no LED (actually it has little paint left...a true natural relic ;) ). Is that "the one"?

On a side note Extreme is doing Pornograffitti in its entirety throughout Europe this summer.

It should be the one. I think they used that chip up until they started producing the Rat II pedal. But I am not completely sure on the timeline, just that supposedly the LM308 chip has the mojo. It's very mid driven, percussive and the pinched harmonics pull off easily in Nuno fashion when you play to my ears it is spot on.

EL34's in the amp with greenbacks tame some of the harshness. And to all accounts the Randall NB100 has the RAT circuit built into the amp as the boost. So basically it was a 2203 with a clean channel with a RAT overdrive up front as a boost. I really like the tone on the Take Us Alive Tour in 2009, aggressive, percussive, and it cut through.

I've read somewhere WFTP album is mostly played with Vibrolux Fender cranked with a big muff in front of it.
First Extreme album JCM800 and rat pedal in front

I recently had both an original 1985 whiteface Rat and a newer Rat II, and it was no contest. The old one definitely had the mojo, as you said. I kinda wish I had kept it, but it didn't really work with my rig at the time and was worth a decent amount.

Why does it seem that everything guitar-related gets worse over time (amps, pedals, speakers, even certain guitars)? In this case, were the older pedals really that much better or is just perception based on rarity driven demand and hype?

I thought he used a Vibrolux????

I had one. Offed it quickly. Reissue.

No, it was Vibroverb...the Vibrolux Reverb was a later blackface model with a very different sound.

Cool.

Didn't Stevie Ray use a Vibroverb for a lot of things?
Blackface model? The 15in speaker.
They made a Diaz modded one for a while.
Or am I thinking of another Fender?

Anyone know what he used live on that tour?? I read somewhere that it was a different fender combo into 4x12s. Apparently the vibrolux had a bad tube and when it finally went it lost its mojo. Can't find the info anymore.
