Nuno on Three Sides

I was fortunate to catch the III Sides tour in Columbus, Ohio, at The Newport Music Hall. They cancelled the first show and came back the following week. I believe Pat Badgers was sick. Unfortunately, they had a fairly short set and my girlfriend's crap attitude the whole time really put a damper on my bliss. It was awesome to see those songs performed up close and watch Mangini chow on some donuts during his single-handed solo section.

Several years later the band I was with had the fortune of playing side-stage at the Gary Cherone front VH concert. Still a top show, for me. No matter all the crap slinging about that album, Cherone was on fire that night, full of energy and it was a blast to see that performance so closely, as well. Sat right in front of the sound board most of the time and it was awesome!

I recently played III Sides for Sunday morning album and coffee session. The Wife really enjoyed it. That album's message really speaks today, IMO.

Thanks for this thread! I kinda wrote III Sides off at the time it came out because I guess I was expecting Pornografiti II. I just downloaded the album and it's so underrated. I think it's like most really good prog rock, it goes over the general public's head. Is it a stretch to call this album prog rock? Loving Nuno's tone on this disk. Am I hearing a little bit of detune in his tone?

Nuno with a RAT? Who knew!

I still have mine, sounds great with a Strat.

It was a '63 Vibroverb Reissue. . .not vintage.
Can you back that up with something? I remember it being a real one, not the reissue, from some interview he did back then in one of the too many magazines that were out at that time. That's been a while though so I could be remembering it wrong.

per Bob St. John post #326 on that gearslutz thread I linked to:

the vibroverb was an original, not a reissue, if i remember right. we had two of them...that was the only one that sounded like that. i believe it had a microphonic tube...which was part of that peaky, saturated sound. if my memory serves me correctly, i don't think he was using an overdrive or pedal unless for an obvious octave or phaser effect. when the tube tied, i don't believe the amp ever sounded the same, hence it never showed up again. i'm pretty sure we used it on some of schizophonic, too...it (like nuno) had a very inimitable sound. i'll have to check out the session notes (which i believe i may have) and get back to you on what the actual front end was before the amp...

Interesting - I swear I have an old Guitar World with Nuno saying it was the reissue - and that they tried an original, but the reissue just sounded better to him. I'll try to dig it up (in my copious amounts of spare time   )

You're correct. It is was the Brownface Vibroverb RI with the 2x10's. Pic and info in an old Guitar Player Magazine I have in storage somewhere. He might have even mentioned trying originals in that article, if I recall correctly.

When I worked at GC in my early 20's, one of those came in and it didn't take me long to slap it on top of a Marshall 1960AX or BX and dime everything with the bass off. It was THE WFTPL tone. No doubt. Now if I could only play like that. An amazingly vocal sounding guitar record.

No, it was an original blackface Vibroverb with a 15” Jensen. I’m good friends with the guy that was his tech for YEARS (the guy that actually found the amp in the first place).

I also heard he ran the mp1 into an old tube hifi amp too like a McIntosh or Dynaco ST-70, something like that.

Soldano and a vibroverb together or at different times? I think the soldano was the 60watter that made in japan.
