Maybe, I've had isolated experiences, but, I find non-locking Gotohs/Grovers/Schallers/Sperzels stay in tune better than Sperzel Locking tuners, and have a finer gear ratio that facilitates more precise tuning. Less "Up and down" tuning to hit the mark.

Am I alone on this.

I think the "Planet Waves" lockers are supposed to have the best of both worlds going on so to speak.

I have no need for locking tuners either.

...but that's partly because I have locking trems and nuts.

+1

ill have to invest in locking tuners without a nut for the fender id like to build. i might sway planet waves or gotohs, but for the non-locking i prefer the gotoh mini's by far.

I have sperzels on 2 of my 6 guitars....they're an improvement over the crap stock tuners they came with, but I agree on the lousy gear ratio....I may look elsewhere.....but I do enjoy talking to that sexy foreign chick at the Sperzel office (owner's wife?) :inlove:

EDIT: I'm wrong....it's the GraphTech owners wife I'm thinking of.

i have 0 problems with 2 of my sperzel locking tuner equipped guitars, they stay in tune better than the PRS locking tuners on my ce22, and of course my LP's tuners suck ass.

Some of these topics yeesh....it's like HC junior around here lately......you've gotta be kidding me......I've seen major tuning stability upgrades with every guitar I've installed or came with Sperzels or Planet Waves....

I have always used locking tuners and they have always been sperzels, no tuning problems, I love em but have no other reference. I want to try those $125 gotohs though...

I love locking tuners and have both Sperzel and Gotoh. They stay in tune fine and allow me to change strings effortlessly in just a couple minutes. Two thumbs up from me.

Steve

There is no point in producing anything but locking tuners at this point.

I was gonna say the same thing. "Anti Locking tuners" makes absolutely no sense, to me thats like saying "Anti String Winders!" because damn it, it works better when I take more time to wind it with my fingers.....

There is literally, figuratively, functionally, virtually, and spiritually no "upside" to standard tuners versus locking tuners except in the case of vintage correctness, where vintage correctness = appeasing old people and collectors neither of whom I give a good god damn about when it comes to guitar technology.

gotoh locking system sucks
I mean... it really locks the string in a way you can't take it off when you want (the string kinda slips to the side of the locking pin) and the center pin is extremely fragile
already lost two 3 tuners cause I couldn't take the strings off
1 broke right in the axis

I'm not kidding.

I don't like the way those knurled locking knobs feel. I don't like the idea of that little rod in there kinking the string, when I'm perfectly capable of "locking" the string in there by wrapping it under itself once. The gear ratio sucks cock in hell, and it doesn't add any "stability".

Your opinion is obviously not the only one, shredo.

Sometimes, I think this place is like TGP junior. sheesh.

The Gotoh vintage lockers I have on the YingYang clone work great and way easy to reload.

I like them for the speed of changing strings. I'm not really convinced they neccessarily keep a guitar in tune better unless you don't know how to properly string. That said, I have them on 2 of 3 guitars...sperzels on one, PRS phaseII on the other.

this sounds kinda shitty:

Are those the Kluson looking ones?

I've been playing 30+ years and have never tried locking tuners. I don't even know how they work.

a threaded thumbscrew pushes a metal rod onto the string inside the tuner shaft.

It's gimmicky, and unnecessary if you know anything about changing strings.

I like locking tuners for ease of use and quick string changes. PRS ones can be a little finicky to get em to lock in just right, but I dig sperzels.
