Nothing beats a Gibson Les Paul for that meaty, thick, growly tone...ya'll know what I'm talkin about.

But, their finishes are hit or miss and I've seen so many shitty QC issues concerning fit and finish, mostly the latter. I just have a hard time plunking down 2k for one of these suckers, especially sight unseen.

Question is, what guitar do you guys think is the best at capturing the LP tone, with a nice top and wonderful fit/finish, without breaking the bank.

Although I must admit....that new Gibson Goldtop Studio is HOT

What kind of music do you like to play? From your avatar, I'm guessing metal?

Mega MEGA Lester fanboi here, but not just the run-of-the-mill Lesters, gents... No way. They have to be cherry picked for this cat :D

Anyway - I'll let you in on a lil' secret about a lil' guitar that sounds incredibly similar to a Lester, maybe almost indecipherably the same as a Lester... I am not kidding. Don't let the used market prices fool you either. These things have got a SICK following all of their own. Check 'em out... I have one, have had one for nearly 20 years (bought it new), and it is an AMAZING player, gorgeous resonant woods, beautiful craftsmanship, great feel, sustain for days, stays in tune, excellent frets, smooth pots, you name it. Only thing I did to mine was plunk a set of Riff Raffs into it - and one of the most notorious guitar techs this side of Canada has said it along with about 90% of the cats who pick it up in my session space....

"Holy shit this thing plays WICKED man!!! And the SOUND!!!!!! "... I'm not kidding:

Hamer Archtop Studio or Studio Deluxe. You can by the simple wrap around tailpiece non-deluxe variety for about $700.00 used, and they're simply killer gits.

Mo

Yamaha SG series. Check out the SG1000,2000,1500 and 1820. They aren't cheap new however can be had for a bargain 2nd hand. I bought my SG2000 without playing it from Japan for about $3000 less than what they cost new over here. The SG1820 is probably going to sound the closest to a Les Paul but I have not played one. The others definitely have their own thing. Quality is superb and they are hand made. If you play on the heavier side of music you may want to swap the bridge Pup out. I have a JB in mine and left the neck stock (it sounds tits  )
That hamer looks sex.

Gotta agree here, I have two Hamer Studios and they just rock. My 93 has all the grunt of a good lester.

I like singlecut style guitars but they DON'T have to say Gibson on the headstock.

Sorry, but in my 23 years of playing I have come to one conclusion.... nothing but a Les Paul sounds like a Les Paul. Look in the used market. If you want that tone, then but the guitar that gets you there without all the work. Just sayin...

The more used & beat up LPs are my favs. My Customs are both abused...but ive put them up against TONS of other LPs & mine always emergered victorious!! :D

So you think it has to say Gibson on the headstock? It's a Mahoganey body, 24.75 scale, 2 humbuckers, it's not rocket science. But Tom Anderson KILLED my thinking that a singlecut guitar needs a set neck to sound great. The Bulldog i just got i prefer in everyway over my LP Custom i recently sold.

I played a McNaught that sounded better than tons of LP's i played. And there's plenty of other's out there who make Gibson killers.

Heritage.

Yea, I've owned a few Heritages and they absolutely KILL tonewise!

Unfortunately, other people are starting to think that too which is driving up both their new and used prices.

And yes, I play Metal/Hard Rock. No guitar is as thick as an LP....no matter how hard I try to convince myself they do.
