Ok, let's face it guys....the Les Paul is the KING of TONE!

Yea, I've owned a few Heritages and they absolutely KILL tonewise!

Unfortunately, other people are starting to think that too which is driving up both their new and used prices.

And yes, I play Metal/Hard Rock. No guitar is as thick as an LP....no matter how hard I try to convince myself they do.

Check out this one then. Yes, it's an Epi, but it's as well built as anything I've played. My buddy has one, and I'm always amazed by it whenever I play it. It sounds FAT too. The neck is really fast on it. Somewhere in between a Gibby neck and an Ibanez Wizard.

I like singlecut style guitars but they DON'T have to say Gibson on the headstock.

Had Gibsons and PRS'. I agree about the muddy tone (for high gain stuff anyways).

These are the two LPs that are floatin my boat at the present. They play awesome and don't mud-out on me...

From what I've been told, they don't have the fat LP tone. They are like the LTD EC series in that the body isn't as thick as a traditional LP and they are supposed to have a more superstrat type tone.

I disagree. My Tremonti that I used to own was thicker and heavier than my buddies LP Custom...weight, size and tonally. I sold it to buy an LP that I actually enjoyed playing. My mistake. The LP sounds great, just a smaller body and neck than I'm used to. Plus I hate fighting to keep it in tune. I have to fight to get a PRS to go outta tune. Plus, a PRS just feels right in my hands. Everybody is different. Plus, I might have a PRS endorsement in the works.

As for Lesters, the right ones are the boss of rock, period. Too bad there are so many lemons out there that kill some cats' first experience. To me? They're the holy graile of guitars - but that's just me, and I love 'em.

I've had a boatload of Les Pauls and one of the best playing and sounding ones, was a first edition of the Japanese Epiphone Elite Les Paul Standards. Sure it had a thick poly finish but it didn't seem to affect the tone one bit. I could really wrench on it without throwing it out of tune. It sounded great with the stock pickups, was fairly light and had a cool real flame top. Great guitar that cost under a grand. Unfortunately I had to sell it for dough and its always been the one that got away.

You know, some of the best rock tones ever were NOT recorded with Les Paul's. Back In Black probably has the thickest meaty growl I've ever heard on record, no LP's there. The first 4 VH records? How about Eric Johnson who has one of the most creamy singing lead tones, no LP's there.

And some of my favorite Gibson tones were not recorded with LP's either. Michael and Rudolph Schenker and Mathias Jabbs used V's and Explorers and DAMM, i loved their tones. Wolf Hoffman is another V user with one of the best crunch tones I've heard.

I'll add another.....Appetite For Destruction. Slash used a custom built "LP" built by a small custom builder...not a GIBSON. (forget who though?)

I have a custom shop 57 goldtop, sings, sustains, crunchy as hell. I love it. But it's ao back heavy I can't sit and play it like I can a strat.

Didn't page play a tele on the first two zep records anyway?

100% correct, that solo on Stairway to Heaven, Tele all the way baby!!

FWIW- I've yet to play two Gibson LP's that sound alike, so I'm fairly certain other builders can get in the ballpark

love most if not all high end variations on the Les Paul 57 VOS, Class 5, Custom, even had a 1960 Classic that screamed

This was a bit of a necrobump, but hey, just over a year later, yep - Les Pauls still rule.

At least we're consistent in our collective preferences
