Ok, so I am going to try a passive pickup...which one???

What passive should I go with in my LP??

After listening to so many of you bitch at me about using too much gain and active pickups...bla, bla, bla. I'm going to try a passive pickup in the bridge of my LP Standard. I used EMG's from 1986 until about two years ago when I switched to Duncan Blackouts. Every now and then I try a passive and get instantly disappointed with the absolute flubby shite bottom end and lack of sustain, not to mention the ridiculous high end screeching.

This is what I want:
1. SUPER tight bottom
2. HOT...cause I ain't a great player.
3. Searing top end without icky ice picks
4. Harmonics galore
5. No wah-wah sound from the mids, but nice full mids
6. NO COVERS

I use mega gain but I also like clean tones and believe it or not I also do some crunchy things. Tones I like are:
Whitesnake, Alterbridge, Winger, Dokken era Lynch and the first Lynch Mob, TNT, Journey (think Edge of The Blade), Tyketto, I can't think at the moment..

I have tried Gibson Classic 57's, Tom Holmes, DiMarzio Super Distortions, Dual Sound, Evolutions, PRS, etc. They did NOT do anything for me.

This LP is a great sounding LP with NO ice picks....this thing sounds like a LP should.

What do you think, Suhr Aldridge? Duncan.xxx? DiMarzio? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. I just want to have something around so that when someone says "I want to hear that rig with passives" then I have that option.

I may turn this into a poll.

Id say a Duncan distortion might be what you are looking for but Im not sure how it will be in a LP type guitar. Anyone who I have hipped to these pickups who have used active pickups or EMG's in the past have loved these pickups.

Now with that said, I still say screw everone who says that you use to much gain and blah blah blah... Ive spent the last year gigging for various bands and after to listening to people Ive turned th gain way down, stopped using effects and listend to all the horseshit that people say and ive come to the conclusion that i had more fun with my gained out effected tone and here is the real ass kicker...... I had more compliment on my playing and tone when I used my regular sound. :lol: :LOL:

The bottom line is if you are doing this to try something different then by all means do it because I have!! But if you are doing because you are listening to what most asshats say then I say screw it ;)
 
I tend to prefer vintage style pups in a LP, but based on what you posted, I am thinking Duncan Custom 5.

I agree 110% with Ralph.

Your tone sounds killer already Mark, and it is your sound. Don't mess with it, you'll only end up fighting it and coming full circle, back to using all Active pups in the end!

I am NOT going to change my "tone" I just want a guitar to have some passives so I can do the comparison in these vids I do. I like my maxed gained delayed tone, and it's staying. I just want to have this LP around so when someone says..."I want to hear it with passives", then I can say here..passives.

Before reading your post I voted Duncan. Still haven't read the post but if you want a passive pickup I think you would love the Duncan Custom. The truth of the matter is I use the Custom with pretty much any guitar I get, which is few, but I love it in everything I've tried it in. I have no idea what you'll like. :D

Oh dang. This is what happens when you give a recommendation without knowing everything about the request.

Forget passive pickups. If you dig the amount of gain you use and the active pickups then keep using them. <burp>
 
i agree with Ralph's pickup suggestion and the rest of his post.


think Psychodave has a Distortion in an LP?


only other pickup i'd through in the mix based on your parameters, would be an Anderson H3.


i like my Anderson pickups, but got to give the edge to the Distortion for feel.
 
No Low output pup will give you that same power, tightnes, especially not the Rebel Yell. The Suhr Aldrich might be a better choice although I havent tried the nailbomb and the higher ouput BKP. That being said I prefer BKP to Suhrs, dimarzio and duncans...

i play nothing but emg's and the super v is prob the only passive i LOVE .... that pickup is so beefy and tight its amazing.... i did a video comparing the super v to an emg 81 .... check it out

This... I was going to recommend the DD but Ralphie beat me to it. I have them in 2 guitars and they're a blast to play.
 
Hey Mark,
You've got incredible tone as it is. I'm sure you can make ANY pickup, active or passive sound incredible.

I would suggest a Duncan Custom, Distortion, Suhr Aldrich, or Anderson H3.

Have you seen the new Blackout Modular Pre-Amp? Might be something worth looking into. It adds active capabilities to any passive pickup. Could install that with an On/Off switch or push/pull. I'd love to hear what this pre-amp sounds like.

Oh, I forgot, I also really like GFS pickups. Most people write them off because they are cheap, but I've got 2 of them, and have played a few more, and always liked them. Worth checking out. Their single-coils are nice as well.
