OK, Why No JJ Pedal?

I've been thinking about this lately. Since the Friedman BE pedal came out, I've been intrigued in figuring out if it has anything special to offer. I've probably seen every video of it at least twice. Every time I play a JJ side by side with a BE100, the JJ wins.

When Bogner came out with the blue and red pedals, they really did a great job of making other amps sounds like Bogners. The BE100 has grown on me a bit, but I still don't think it really gives your amp a signature sound. However, the JJ to me seems to be more easily identifiable. Therefore, why no JJ pedal? I think if there was one, I'd want it over the BE. Your opinions?

I would agree on the JJ vs the BE. That's why I bought a JJ and I've never looked back at the BE.

I would also agree that more could be done with the JJ circuit and I would add the Butterslax to that. Why not do pedals for both and why not do small box 20 watt or Runt versions. A small single channel PCB Butterslax would be awesome.

Haven't tried the BE pedal so I can't comment on that.

Just my opinion but the BE-OD has more gain than anyone could use without turning into a distorted mess of fuzz. Don't know how a JJ or Bslax would be different than just more gain other than maybe adding a mid knob?

I don't think it's a gain issue. It's more voicing. When I spoke with Dave he said the JJ BE mode is more aggressive sounding than the BE and the JBE is more aggressive and more saturated. The Butterslax is even more so aggressive than the JJ.

If I had describe them, the BE is boosted modded Plexi, while the JJ is dark angry Plexi. But then you also have the JBE which is totally saturated dark angry Plexi. I play Stoner/Doom type music through the JJ and I wouldn't want to use a BE for that genre.

Never heard all 3 of his heads so thanks for the description !!

most people are saying the pedal is more aggressive than the actual amp. Do you own the pedal?

I would be more interested in a butterslax or JJ pedal for sure.

Makes more sense for them to release them in stages though, more people would buy them all instead of just one.

Have you played a 2016 BE and A/B that with the JJ? I own both and the are VERY similar. I agree on the older BEs, which is why I got rid of my earlier one (2014 I think) and bought a JJ. The 2016 BE may be a desert island amp for me. That amp gets MEAN. FAR more versatile than the JJ. Don't get me wrong, love my JJ but it has some limitations (as do all amps).

I didn't realize he updated the BE. What are the changes?

My guess is there'll be a JJ pedal in the not too distant future.

Start with the most popular/recognized model (BE), see how it goes; if successful, follow up with the next most popular/recognized model.

Repeat if necessary.

I'm more interested in his Dirty Shirley pedal, already have the BE-OD which has way more gain than i use but its there if I do want to use it... I love that pedal.

From what I have heard in interviews etc..., Dave doesn't really seem to love mega gain. His personal opinion is the more gain lessens the dynamics of the amp. The BE-100 and JJ are pretty high gain but not super over the top IMO. The Butterslax is very gainy but that is what Kelliher wanted. Doubt Dave would have made that amp on his own if it wasn't for Kelliher.

I've never played one of the BE-100 OD pedals but it does seem to be mega gainy. Almost more than you would ever use.

I'd be more into a mini JJ or butterslax amp vs a pedal any day ;) 20 or 50 watt.
