he is a lot older than I thought! He had another band before this called mariani. there was no actual video footage, but that was his band in the 60s!!there is songs posted on youtube.

in the electromagnets video, you can see how much he improved over the years. eric Johnson HAS BEEN PLAYING GUITAR FOR OVER 50 YEARS!!! damn!!!!

I think Eric is nearly the exact same age as EVH, ~61.

Amazing how formed Eric already was at that time. Holy neck dive on that old alembic series one bass. He had a string around the headstock attaching it to the strap!

Minty custom color '57 Stratocaster. $$$$$ today, probably cost Eric $500.

I know he's a Strat guy but there's some sweet tones coming from this SG.

Oh yeah. Love the SG tones. EJ's magnum opus is not Cliffs, it is Last House on the Block. ;)

Remember back in the 80's when men wore lipstick and spandex and were hailed as guitar wizards while playing stupid songs about drinking and partying on a Saturday night? Occasionally one of them would admit that there's unknown guys out there who play amazing stuff and just blow them away. Eric Johnson was one of those unknown guys.

I was thinking the same thing...

I love this stuff. Eric was great.
I love watching the early Dregs stuff too. Steves tone was so clean. Probably a Twin or Music Man.
Much better than that mess of a tone he's used for twenty years or so. ;)

i remember reading about him playing on cristopher cross's sailing album and after hearing his solo on that minstrel gigolo track i became a fan

then tones came out and the rest is history

this old stuff has a lot of clapton vibrato and bill connors with chick corea "hynm of the seventh galaxy" influence.
