Should be off topic but I haven't seen either yet.

Going back up north this Christmas and the wife said she wants to see either Trans Siberian Orchestra or Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker.

Who here has seen either and although TSO would be way more rocking, I need some honest input.

Thanks!

TSO is an amazing show ,probably the best ever for arena rock pyro ,lights.
Music is great as well

I'm leaving towards it and while she loved TSO, I don't want to make the selfish choice.

My thoughts exactly, incredible shows

Just saw TSO in Raleigh last week. I don't know anything about that performance of The Nutcracker, but if they only do it in Boston, I'd say that. TSO tour all over the place and you could probably find a date within reasonable distance from home another time. TSO is amazing, but ultimately it's a rock concert. I'm sure there are many women out there who'd prefer seeing The Nutcracker.

I must be the only guitar player not interested in hearing rock drums and guitar over Christmas songs...
So cheesy to me.
That's why we have choices.

I was unfortunate enough to see TSO a few years ago and thought it was complete garbage and a waste of my time. I'd go see the nutcracker. However, if Xmas music is your thing and you're going to be in New England, I'd see if Gary Hoey was playing a show.

She mentioned that when she saw TSO (probably 4-7 years ago) that they were flat out great. If Alex S. is playing with them, it'd be wicked cool to see that. Hoey is amazing too.

I love Christmas music but I like a more traditional approach. And the Boston Garden isn't the best venue. Either way, both are fine picks and it depends on how the night goes. I'm taking her to the North End but the real surprise is that I'm getting diamond earrings for her and I'm trying to plan when to surprise her.

Thanks for the input guys.

TSO is amazing. They have an east coast and west coast group. I've seen them several times. This years show looks to be the best so far.

TSO would be a great show, but if you've already seen it, check out the Nutcracker. It's a great piece of music, the female dancers are sexy as hell, and you're wife will love it. Win-win.

Doesn't TSO have one of the Savatage guys playing?
Chris Caffery is the guitarist and was in Savatage. TSO still credits some of the other Savatage guys, not sure if they only write/produce or what.

Nutcracker. Or risk getting yours cracked!

Goes better with earrings too. A wonderful romantic night she will always remember. Bank that shit for later use.

I have a friend that's a girl, and not into heavy music. She LOVED the TSO, and she's pretty much a cute nerd girl.

I love me some TSO, love all the players in it who are amazing dudes, Hoekstra, Scott Soto, Pitrelli, etc (Met a few of them at bar the other night, they got into Salt Lake a day early for press and hung out at this bar downtown and well, there's Yngwie's old singer, Al Pitrelli and a few of the other members of the group) and they come to Salt Lake every year but only for their Christmas show! I wish they would come here in the spring and play Beethoven's Last Night! Gahh! I fucking love that album! I need to see it live!

All of the core Savatage musicians (Plate, Pitrelli, Caffery, Middleton) are involved in TSO, in either the East or West touring group. There are 2 separate groups because it's the only way to cover the entire country in less than 3 months. Plate and Caffery are in East, Pitrelli and Middleton are in West. No Skolnick again this year for East coast, though. I don't even think Hoeskstra's in either.

TSO is Savatage. Apparently according to Jon Oliva they could not get air play for Christmas in Sarajevo of the Savatage Dead Winter Dead album so they went back to the Radio Stations and changed the name on the single as Christmas in Sarajevo by Trans Siberian Orchestra. IT got lots of air play with the name change. So they continued on making that style of music under the TSO brand. The Music is still written by Jon Oliva, Paul Oneil, Al Pitrelli, Chris Caffery, Jeff Plate and Johny Lee Middleton, Zak Stevens, Only Pitrelli,Caffery,Middleton,Plate, Skolnick have performed it live. They all also do other solos gigs and bands. Like Circle II Circle, Jon Oliva's Pain, Testament, Metal Church, Chris Caffery ETC Now they are to busy to put out Savatage music.

Mrhiwatt

Not exactly right, but you were close! The Savatage "Dead Winter Dead" album was not really "worked" to radio because they had no shot of getting on the air for anything but metal shows. However, some Top 40 DJ's picked up on the "Christmas Eve" song -- Scott Shannon on WPLJ in NY being a prime example -- and it quickly got tons of airplay nation-wide. There was no song name change at all, though. If that did happen, it didn't happen for a few years. Due to its success, TSO was created as an opportunity to cash in on it, which was very smart.

The "too busy for Savatage" is not true, that band is not ever coming back. Jon doesn't want to do it anymore without his late brother, it has nothing to do with "we're too busy with other stuff".

Thanks for all of the cool suggestions.

I'm gonna do the Nutcracker has the Boston ballet does an amazing rendition and it's a little more touching for Meg since she is a dancer.

Planned a trip to the first restaurant we went to for our first date and I'm getting her diamond earrings.

Gonna be a great Christmas!
