What were some of the best bands from those times? I've been on a huge GnR kick lately. Not much into hair metal but I've always loved GnR and some other bands like Skid Row and Poison.

So what were some of the lesser known/harder rock bands that were big and rocking in that local scene?

Love/Hate did 2 great albums that never got the proper attention in my opinion. 'Black Out In The Red Room' is fantastic, and 'Wasted In America' is good also.

Not sure if they were part of the LA scene, but Tora Tora definitely qualifies as a band in that style that never got big recognition.

Tora Tora...walking shoes... good tune isn't there a DLR, VH ref in there somewhere..

HairNation plays some of the lesser known bands and tunes from that era...
XYZ comes to mind

I was a hair metal fanatic man. Listen to Legs Diamond "Out on Bail". T.N.T. were underrated and had some killer songs.

In my opinion, the best years for hair metal were 84' to 86'. By the time Warrant, Steelheart, and some of those other bands hit, the best stuff had already happened IMO.

Here are some killer songs to get you started:

Keel - The Right to Rock
Black and Blue - Hold on To 18
Loudness - Crazy Nights
King Kobra - Hunger

Icon, King Kobra, Dangerous Toys, Hurricane, not sure if all were from that scene but they are bands that come to mind that never really hit it off...I remember seeing King Kobra open for someone, maybe Def Lep back in the mid 80s.

Forgot to mention Saigon Kick...The Lizard is a great album.

That's crazy we both said "King Kobra" at the same time! LOL!

People don't realize Carmine Appice was the drummer, Mick Sweda went on to Bulletboys, Johnny Rod was in W.A.S.P. and the lead singer is now a woman named Marcie. :D

I heard "Pretty Maids" Future World in the late 80s and loved that song. I remember buying "Dirty Looks" debut album. Don't remember a lot of the songs though.

Ok, Saigon Kick is what im talking about. So far thats the best to me. Skimmed through a bit of everything mentioned. Lots of cool stuff and wow what an influence they had on Alice in Chains. Definitely will be checking more out from them.

Anything around those times that were heavier like Saigon Kick? Seems like GnR kind of brought a new sound to that scene maybe?

So, as far as a "scene" some of these bands weren't from or played LA, Saigon Kick I believe are from south Florida. I was gonna mention Cry of Love, not that heavy but man what a cool album Brother is...Audley Freed is a monster player.

You can't go wrong with just about anything from Loudness, especially from Disillusion, Thunder in the East and Lightning Strikes. Though they are pretty far from being an LA band. Those albums are YEARS worth of guitar lessons. Geezus, is Akira good.

I knew one of the Appice brothers was the drummer, not sure which one. No clue that Sweda was the GP. Wow his tone was all chorused up on the Kobra album. Bulletboys he dropped the gain and went dry. Liked that tone best.

I always liked this song...had an early hagar/montrose swing to it

Oh and speaking of montrose...bulletboys was another great 80's band. Their cover of rock candy was pretty good.

Yeah wow that one is great too. A lot going on. From the little I heard: Neo, Heavy, Rush. All kinds of stuff. Killer musicians.

I thought Saigon influenced AIC but after looking they came out around the same time. Crazy how similar some of it is.

There was a pretty cool band called AXIS late 70's in the L.A. scene had Danny Johnson on guitar and Vinny Appice, I still listen to their CD it was called 'Circus World',

SNOW was pretty cool had Carlos Cavazo and his brother before Carlos hooked up with Quiet Riot

SUITE 19 was also good, guitar player named Greg Leon who actually played in the first incarnation of DOKKEN

STORMER with Jimi Bates on guitar

Don't know if Y&T are from LA, but I really like them. Heavy, bluesy vocals, and a lot of killer riffs.

In late 1982-83' our band INVADERS was part of that scene. The Troubadour was where we ended up playing the most and it was an awesome time to be a musician. I really loved not only playing the TROUBADOUR but hanging out there too. I remember two shows in particular we did... one night with SLAYER and another night with Lizzy Borden. For a short time Gene Allen from Lizzy Borden was a roommate of mine in a small apartment in the San Fernando Valley. In the city of Reseda to be exact which was right down the street from The Country Club where I saw Queensryche , STEELER with Yngwie Malmsteen and many other great bands from that time. As for bands we would see regularly on the strip at that time that come to mind were WASP , ARMORED SAINT , Black and Blue , Joshua , BITCH , ODIN , Warrior , Witch , The Brooklyn Brats , HELLION were all playing the Troubadour and the Whisky on any given night back then. You never would know who might just show up. One night David Lee Roth randomly showed up to hang out at the Troubadours bar and get plastered. LOL... Below are a couple of pics of me at the tender age of 17... one out front of the Troubadour before a show and couple on stage. Im the one with the Black and White striped flying V. I can honestly say that those were some of the BEST times of my life. And without a doubt the most sexy , beautiful women ever were 80s babes!!! I even met my wife at the Troubadour in 1984 and we are still together today. Cheers guys.

I found this flyer searching Google of a show we played in Buena Park called "The Woodstock."Its a little hard to read but our band INVADERS went on at 8pm. You can see Slayer , Silent Rage and Dark Angel played that day too. Good times!!
