Old Peavey 4x12 Cab - worth it or not worth the bother?

It depends - do you not already have a 4x12? If you don't have one, yeah if you replace the speakers i'm sure it would sound badass.

Especially if you already have a quad of speakers, or have speakers in mind to replace the sheffields (which I dont care what anyone says, are fucking terrible unless you're playing swedish death metal with an hm2)

If you already have a 4x12 though, and don't have a need for a new cabinet, i don't understand why it would be worth all the time and effort though

Those MS412 cabs are tanks. Worth $150 if the money is burning a hole in your pocket for a decent speaker. Or, if you have some old Celestion 75s laying around or whatever then load up. They are front mounted speakers though.

My friend still has that cab from the 90's. It sounds like muffled shit, but is a solidly constructed cab. A speaker replacement would do it well. Even dropping in some cheap Celestion 70/80's would be an improvement.

If you already have a quad of speakers or can get some on the cheap $150 is worth it. Otherwise it's not really worth the investment.

Those cabs are indeed tanks. Funny thing is those Sheffield 1290's that are in that cab are actually my favorite speakers. I don't however particularly like them in those front loaded cabs. They sound killer to me in my old rear loaded VTM cabs or my old Emperor cabs.
Bring your amp and test it out. You might like it.

I still have and use mine. The SHeffield 1290 is kinda in the "GT-75" ballpark, soundwise. If thy don't have voice coil rub I would suggest playig them a bit before yanking them for something else. You might like them. Listen with your ears, not with your eyes looking at the brand name. Just take it easy on the presence, trble, and bright switch.

Dont like it?

Burn the bitch in a huge bonfire, while doing some naked dance around the flames.

Big ass woman ONLY :worship:

Oh and rip apart the speakers and use the magnets to hang refrigerator pics. Kids school report cards/evil crayon drawings etc.

At $75, I'd grab it and load it down with Avatar speakers fasho. That's cheaper than the wood/ material to build it.

Those cabs sound like muffled shit even with good Celestions in them. I tried G12k100s and g12-65s in there. It’s like all the character just disappears. The older Peavey cabs mentioned already are nice and sound good.

If it's plywood, grab it fast. You can put the speakers you want in it. Even if you had a table saw and all the other tools to build a cab which you don't, you couldn't buy the materials for 75 bux.. Plus you would fuck it up.. LOL :ROFLMAO:

I'll second (third? fourth?) the comment that these things are built like tanks. Near indestructible. If you needed a 4x12 at your rehearsal space and didn't like the idea of leaving something expensive or boutique there, it would be hard to beat this. And I also agree with spending one or two rehearsals with it at stage volume before yanking the speakers. You may end up doing that anyway, but at least you will have a solid reference point for any speakers you swap in along the way.

I have the slant version of this cab. Have gigged it off and on for almost 30 years. Buy with confidence. The Sheffield 1290s in it are a Peavey/Emminece attempt to replicate Celestian GT75s. If used at very low volume with lots of treble and presence they can sound fizzy. At playing volume they are perfectly fine. Cab construction is very rugged, and I actually prefer metal grills for cabs that are going to transported to gigs and back, as if a mike stand or something falls onto speaker cloth it can go right through and puncture a speaker cone, whereas the metal grill just gets scuffed or dented.

Pro tip - speakers should always be transported face up or face down if you can - that way bumps move the speaker coil in its natural motion. If you stand them up, then the road bumps try to move the voice coil sideways.
