As a few of you may know I've been experimenting with getting doom tones as of late and today I think I found something pretty epic. I was having a little trouble getting my Marshall's clean channel dialed in to the correct crunch sound so I decided to plug into my Tube Driver, which is my go-to cleans amp. I clicked on my distortions one at a time and it sounded better than my Marshall's clean channel, which surprised me because Doom was pretty much founded on Marshalls. I decided to up the channel gain a bit, which is a non master volume gain, and boy did it bloom. The higher it went the bass came forward and deepened, the treble softened and it started sounding really really doomy, in a very good way. This amp has so much clean headroom I was even able to run both of my distortion pedals cascading eachother and the result was godly in and of itself. At this volume anything can sound good though and I'll have to wait until I can see what Mike says about it. That will have to be tomorrow or something because I go to work soon. Just thought I'd share.

My ears are bleeding, is that normal?

I thought Doom tone was founded on Sunn and Matamp amps? And ofcourse Laneys.

What exactly constitutes a good "doom" tone? I don't really know what separates that genre from the other 500 genres of hard rock/metal now :scared:

killer!!

I've been getting deeper and deeper into doom & drone tones too, and yep I even dial 'em up on my MarkIV. Need to try it with the JCM800 though. I'm pretty sure there's a Tool song which has relatively doomy sound- I can't remember the name  but it's pretty cool.

Personally, I don't think Doom is traditionally Marshall based at all. For the most part it's made up of whatever was a available.... and usually turned up loud as fuck.

The only rule is that there is no rule. Doom as a sub-genre has grown so broad that it's similar to saying "Heavy Metal", particularly if you include the sludge and stoner side of it. On one end of the spectrum you have dudes using overdriven Oranges, Matamps and Sunns with or without distortion pedals, while on the other you have dudes using Soldano's and Dual Rectifiers.

Candlemass used Marshalls I think, so that's my benchmark. Sunn is more a Drone thing than doom.

Is this an example of good or bad doom tone?

And, yes, I am serious

This band has come through here about three times and are AMAZING. Their tone is a thousand times more crushing on stage than in this video, and the guitarist plays through some serious gear. So, soooo heavy!

The cleans were good, the dirt was pretty crap.

Picked a couple of the below... doom is a pretty broad based sub-genre... lots of different sounds to it, right from slow and drony to fast and sludgy.

The problem with 'doom' is that it has a really stupid name that turns a lot of people off. It's basically a sub-genre that evolved by going left when everyone else went right.... so, when 'metal' went shredding and glam, a bunch of bands (Saint Vitus, Candlemas, ect) stuck with the 'doomy', riff orientated sound of bands like Sabbath and Pentagram. Over time it evolved a number of offshoots, like sludge metal (Melvins, Soundgarden, Crowbar, High on Fire), Grunge (Tad, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains), Stoner Metal (Sleep, Electric Wizard, Down), Stoner Rock (Kyuss/Queens of the Stoneage, Monster Magnet, Acid King), and Drone (Earth, Sunn).

Further, doom sub-genres are also broad categories, with the bands that occupy them spread out over decades. Due to it's throwback nature and total disregard for being totally original when it comes to copying the sounds of the past it's probably the most musically diverse music that's going on it modern metal.

So... long story short, great music, stupid name.
