Once upon a time.. a Wizard and a Splawn got together

You need a wizard bad . Once in front of one it’s a must . Plus you love dime

i know wizard owners love their wizards but ive not heard much outside a few lower gain clips that have impressed me at all, certainly not enough to drop the coin they go for. the descriptions of the feel and the amount of month old ones being flipped scares me away. i dont really think the wizard had all that much to do with dimes tone considering its been basically the same right from the first album in 84.

Well forget about dime , I have a lot of amps and I’m telling you once in front of a wizard you’re like now I get how he gets away with these prices lol . Fr You know I love my Hermansons but the Wizard just hits like no other amp while being tight and clear with saturation aby you want

Yeah, my modern classic boosted shits on every other amp I have had or currently have.

Even with 2022 being almost over, Scott's amps are still dishing out killer tones while flying under the radar for most people. I have no clue why they are so underrated when they hang with any of the boutique amps out there at a fraction of the price. Super nice guy to deal with, too. I'd love to play a Wizard someday, though.

Splawns are sick amps. I’ve owned a few. Just with my wizard even recording I don’t need to do hardly anything to it in a mix. They just sit perfect. The low end and not compressed feel in the room is just wild too.

That’s kind of the problem though, they sound too open and dry to me with that kind of rolled off top end which I’m sure punches hard, but not something I find too exciting. I’d love to play one, im not dropping what any three of my amps minus my iic+ would cost combined though.

Definitely not dry if you get mtl 2 . It’s perfect combo of open and saturation but I get it man . We all have different ears

Both are plate driven tone stack amps. Wizard has way bigger transformers and is point to point vs PCB. If you look at the schematics, the Wizard has values that will favor a larger, or "bigger" low midrange and openness vs the Splawn. Splawn would be more compressed and greasy. Splawn uses 1.5k cathodes and 1000pf peakers whereas the Wizard uses 2.7k cathodes and 2200pf peakers, just as a couple of examples. That alone really changes the feel and dynamics.

Wizard is not PTP. It is handwired construction on a narrow turret board. It is very well done though. In my experience with a loaned MCII, it tended to overpower the mix. I found the lead sound to lack bloom even at a pretty loud volume. I can get a Splawn to fit in a mix better without overpowering the rest of the band. The Splawn bloomed into better feedback for me. Wizard MCII is a Killer amp, no doubt, but I find the Splawn suits me better...

Bash-Man, was that you, known as Duke of Metal at the time, that came down for a mini-amp fest at my friend’s place in the Niagara Region about 15 years ago? The guy I’m thinking of brought a bunch of preamps (Mesa Triaxis, modded Ada mp1 and an ENGL 530 I believe) which all went through my Strategy 400 power amp/VHT fat bottom cab. Duke of Metal sounds very familiar.

Hell they both sound good to me. In the end it's not about price it's about what feels and sounds right to you the player. If that's a "status" symbol amp or something of lower value, who cares.

No that would not have been me.. but perhaps the name rings a bell as I used to frequent rig-talk (previously known as Hugerackinc) as well as Harmony-Central under that username and known for using an ADA MP-1 3TM).

However, if there's going to be an amps fest in the Niagra Region, I'd be more than happy to attend and bring some gear out.

Cheers

big volume disparity in those vids...
Sadly my External interface wasnt delivering proper audio, so we just used a cell phone camera. I know its not the best quality.

Looking to resolve the issue with the audio interface for next time hopefully.

I know I had fun cranking through amps, glad you were able to make the trip out to St Catharine’s. Even with all this most excellent weather we had on Saturday.
Absolutely buddy.. next time it'll be spring/summer time since you live around a snow belt... Haha
