No I believe it.

He had this shiny JS that was loaded with 2 Pearly Gates, or at least they were visibly saying "Seymour Duncan" on the bobbins

 
Dimarzios have a very fat attack and to my mind it gets too artificial in your finders...
Duncans have more attack but they lack mids...
EMG 81 are great but compressed and lack dynamics...

Its only 10K but with 42wire so it has a strong pull while remaining clear...
 
I enjoy my Dimarzios for what they are. They give me that specific sound like Vai and works well for that styling of music. My Jem has a Breed in the neck I think and an Evo 2 in the bridge if I recall. They are a ton of fun for specific sounds.

That being said, I go in and out of love with my Illuminators on my 7. I kinda like them and in ways they are kind of compressed and brittle on the top end.

The bare knuckles I have are cool but I got them for a steal, could not bring myself to drop the money for a set, as I honestly have the same on/off about the Silo set I have.

I have zero guitars with Duncan's but a buddy has some and they are hit and miss on the models for my tastes, but that's everything right?

I have really enjoyed the few Planet Tone sets I have tried, but I like extremely open sounding pickups in a lot of my guitars, that may not be for some.

Dimarzios , I feel I can be looser and I can flub and it won't be noticed as much. They smooth things out for sure, which again, I like, especially if I am going for shred guitar.


I can like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.
 
I like Duncans overall better than DiMarzios, but both make pickups that I like.

That being said, though, I feel DiMarzio has more variety when it comes to neck pickups. From the Duncan HB line, it seems like 80-90% of the neck pickup options are sorta 7.5K-ish Alnico and that's it. Very few stray away from that formula.

A variation of a Duncan is usually my go to or what I would probably recommend for most high gain applications. Consistency and $, for the most part.
That said; my personal favorite pickups (as in found the best bridge pickup for the guitar, ymmv) are PRS \m/, Duncan Nazgul, Railhammer Chisel, Burstbucker 2/3, Classic 57. The young me would have been all over 500T, Super Distortions, and Invaders. I would probably still leave those in a guitar that came with them if they were paired properly, but wouldn't seek them out.
 
The DiMarzios on my JP6 sound great. The SDs in my Charvel also sounds great. And the DiMarzio Twang Kings in my Tele sound REALLY great. I prefer not to choose one brand over the other and just enjoy the pickups that sound good regardless of who makes them.
 
Duncans are my first port of call. If I can't figure out what pickups I want, I just get a set of Duncans and it usually ends up being what I was looking for.
 
Here's my DiMarzio/Seymour experience. Had 2 Hamer Chap's in the late 80's one with a DiMarzio wound "Slamer" (10kish overwound paf) the other a SD JB. Wanted to find a reason to swap the DiMarzio for a JB (just to match each other - consistency I guess? Was also able to buy a JB off the shelf, not so much the Slamer). Couldn't find any reason to replace the DiMarzio - it just sounded "right" in that axe, note definition/clarity seemed as good if not better. That being said, I probably still sounded like me no matter which one I played.

That’s very interesting. I wanted to like them, but the mids have a splatty loose quality I didn’t care for. The last couple of Metallica albums showcase that sound 😞

It’s the only guitar I’ve tried them in. YMMV. I didn’t want to like them but my buddy is endorsed so they didn’t cost me anything. I actually really like them in that particular guitar. I’m a big fan of the 500t , Duncan Distortion or Custom. The MCP Solution in my Explorer may be my favorite. It all depends on the guitar I suppose. Tbs. I haven’t found a DiMarzio since the old school Super Distortion that I like. Same with BKP. I’ve hated all of them that I’ve tried.
