My brother has his own business, and does custom vinyl installations, mostly vehicles, boats, off-road stuff, etc.. He's even done helmets for racers, and has done some pretty fancy stuff for sports celebrities.

I've been kicking around an idea to do guitars. The thing is, you can pretty much have WHATEVER your heart desires, whatever your imagination can come up with, without the huge expense of custom paint jobs. He uses top-grade 3M product, and you'd swear it was painted on. It actually acts as a layer of protection as well, dings are absorbed to an extent. And, if you happen to want a new look, it can be stripped, and changed at will!

So, what do you guys think?? Do you think it's marketable? Maybe buy Warmoth bodies, and sell them with custom wrap of choice? Discuss...

the Vinyl is awesome looking. Does the finished product sound any different ?

Idk... kinda cool, but just kinda wrong on so many levels. The paint work/relic job looks awesome, but why on an Ibanez ???

It's my brother's guitar, he did it for shits and grins. Its an old Fujigen RG he paid $300 for, that was beat up. He's done some carbon fiber, and wild things for some buddies that came out really awesome.

That's a good question. I can't see/hear it making a huge difference. Its basically a thin layer, essentially half the thickness of a huge sticker!

I'm just brainstorming, at this point..

I remember Warren from Ratt having snakeskin glued to a guitar body, he said it made a huge difference to apply the skin to an unprimed body, a primered body with the skin over it was too muddy, I know the vinyl is different, but that’s the only thing I know about putting anything other than paint or oil on a guitar.

Yeah, there's no primer involved with the vinyl.

Well, you’re wrapping over the factory primer and paint unless you strip it off first...

A few companies have tried it. I like the idea, but it’s hard to wrap the edges.

Yeah I know everyone gets a trophy and all but that looks like shit. If this is the launch it should be next level shit not bottom of the barrel.

Edit. I thought it was just the top but it is around the edges

What are you talking about?

I get the idea and it could work. I think that hydro dipping is a better choice but you could of chose a better graphic because to me it looks terrible. These days no body is supposed to tell the truth even when someone asks for it. Not everyone got a trophy when I grew up. There were winners and losers and this bullshit these days about hurt feelings turns out the types that can't handle the truth. That's what I meant.

I understand your opinion. Just don't know why you had to be a total DICK about it.

I think that he doesn't like the print or is confused as to the fact that the print intentionally looks "steam punk" for lack of a better word. Personally, I think your brother did a great job, it looks like a paint job to me and that is what matters the most to the customer. I have to imagine a lot of the 80's Ibanez graphics were just prints as well, that were lacquered over.

I have. And I could see you labeled as all three.

Well, that went south quick....Jeez. Exo-metal went mental for no reason it seems. I think the idea is cool. Guitar players will spend money on anything basically and changing the look of an ax without a full re-paint is a no brainer.

Haha that's great, maybe you like many, have too many "feelings". You started this thread and you asked. Appearently you expected me to lie and only give you something supportive and positive
