Well, after years and years of using whatever was laying around, and figuring I was doing a disservice to my high end amps, guitars, cabs, what have you, I finally broke down and ordered a decent set of cables for my simple rig.

I read a bunch of reviews, and people seemed to think that the planet waves custom series were on par with Mogami and the like, and I have a whole bunch of ebay bucks to use, so I took the dive. 1 5 ft cable, 1 20 ft cables, 6 6" right angled patch cables and a 5 ft speaker cable. Total ran me $120 shipped, but obviously it didn't come out of my pocket.

Some People say they hear differences in good vs cheap cables, some people say cables are cables. I've never really looked into it, but figured fuck it, why not.

Anyone else have preferred cables or ones they stay away from?

I like cloth wrapped cables so I've been using Pig Hog stuff this last year. I'm really digging them so far. I don't buy into the snake oil bullshit with instrument cables. As long as they aren't the super cheap ones you should be good. Now for speaker cables get the best one you can afford. There will be a difference with that.

Only difference I've noticed between cables is noise. Some cables transfer mechanical noise into the amp (like the cable banging against the ground or another object). Some cables have more/less shielding and pick up RF/hum/buzz from various sources. And of course, the longer the cable, the more capacitance it has, and thus the more high-end it rolls off. Other than those very real and very technical differences, I don't buy into the fancy materials or tone mojo BS.

This. And durability/preference of materials and looks. I personally switched to planet waves because they are quite nice for the money and haven't caused me an issue yet after a few years of (home) use.

I like braided cables too. You can get very nice cables made to order from Best-tronics for very low cost - especially if you do it around a holiday when they offer 15% off custom cables. Their cables have lower capacitance than most of the high-end stuff - including mogami gold mentioned above - and they're much cheaper.

The Custom series cables I own have been rock solid and they sound good...

...but!

The American Stage cables I own sound noticeably better. They're not as tough, though.

Awesome man! Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check them out for sure. Cheers!

I honestly don't think theirs a audible difference in decent cables. There's possible noise interference form cheap cables. For me, reliability, availability, and a generous warranty are the factors to consider.
