So let's say we have the exact tone of a distorted guitar from a profiler and we can play the song spot on.
We have the original song in a file (say MP3) and we load it into our DAW, say like Cubase.
We play along and record in with a Focusrite Scarlett. Profiler out to Focusrite in, 1/4" jacks. We do nothing special with the settings in the Focusrite. Just prevent it going into the red.
We line up the guitar track with the original song in Cubase.
We use the volume level to bring out the guitar track slightly so we can hear it is added on after.
No EQing. No filters.
We export a WAV file. We don't adjust the settings there much.
Why does it sometimes turn out to sound bad in a mix of the original song? I get if we recorded all the instruments and singing again that it would probably sound better in that sort of mix before we mix down after adding our filters.
However, I have seen and heard some very good YouTube videos of people playing along to MP3s of the original and they sound incredible.
What is being done to do that? Can anyone offer any tips on how to use settings on Cubase to get the best out of such a mix? YouTube videos, tips, anything would be great. I would like to improve this as much as I possibly can.
