And regardless of what anyone thinks, Mick Mars is still ten times better than Kirk Hammett, CC Deville, or Tom Morello.

Let's not get crazy now. Kirk has wrote some great solos throughout his career compared to Mick

The Unforgiven Solo is a masterpiece. Mick has not come close to anything like that. Sorry

I have Shout and Too Fast burned on to 1 disc ... I gave them a listen again yesterday after I saw this thread ...

That's the Crue I like. Anything after that and they lose me with the cheeze factor.

Theatre of Pain was the beginning of the end for me also ...

I did like a few tracks off of Girls Girls Girls .. and maybe a song or 2 after that

Yeah TOP was shit, and GGG wasn't much better. I do love me some Dr Feelgood though

Doesnt Nikki pretty much just chug away on open strings. So maybe he wrote most of the songs chugging away on an open 'a' singing "girls, girls, girls". Then Mick would come in and play some shit over it.

Yeah but didn't Nikki Sixx pretty much write all of the rhythm/riff stuff? Not knockin' Mic. Just sayin'.

Next to Kirk Hammet the luckest bitch in music, freaking hack.

Although I'm a fan of Mick's work with Crue...this made me laugh out loud.

Crap...should have re-worded that!!!

Nick Dicks is the biggest hack not Mick :)

"Great solos" and "Kirk" don't belong in the same sentence! :)

To each his own Chris, but saying that Mick is 10x better then Kirk is just crazy. Kirk maybe a sloppy player, but he has written some great solos compared to Mick. Every solo that Mick has played/written is just plain boring.

Oh, of course "to each his own!" I'm just stating my opinion. I realize other people feel differently and that's cool with me. I just hate Kirk's phrasing. To me, it all sounds unnatural or something. Pretty much like wanking that wasn't really thought out. It doesn't "speak" to me, I guess. No biggy.

The unnaturalness that you are hearing is Kirk playing out of key or using a rooted major scale when the tune is in a minor key. I think he is one of the worst guitar players of all time. At least Mick played in key.

Giving Kirt Hammet 12 sig guitars is the same as giving Stevie Wonder a sig Corvette.

They both cant use the freaking things to save their lives.

Agreed! Mick can definitely play in key, but Hammett's recorded solo's (such as the intro solo's in One and Sanitarium) are very well written. I wonder if someone else might have played those solo's on the original recordings because I can't stand to hear him play either of them live!

You're kidding about the solo in The Unforgiven, right?

He just ruins it for me. I think what attracted people to metallica was the driving rhythms and the agressivness/speed . Ive always said that if Metallica had a kick ass solo guitar player, I would have payed way more attention. I thought they had some cool stuff but when hamfist started soloing, I had to turn it off :D

Oh, I see how you are... You're all "jumpy, jumpy" when I make a comment about not liking Kirk, but you "understand" when Ralphie makes a comment about him. Geeeeez... I get no love around here...

;)

I think Ralph was a bit more tactful in his response....but I always respect your opinion! Can we have a group hug now???

A lot of Hammett lovers in here I guess ...

I think that with everything ... perspective is key ...

I grew up loving Metallica and loved Kirk growing up ( I was 15 when MOP came out )

the Black Album did me in though ...

anyway I think he was perfect for what they needed ( or wanted ) not just his playing ... but the whole picture .

Paul and Gene ... woops I meant James and Lars were looking for someone to just come in and blow 90 mile an hour solo's over the 90 mile an hour riffs ...

and I think he did a pretty good job considering what he had to play over ...

now when James decided to start sitting down to piss ( nothing else matters and the like ) and started writing different stuff ( slow and more melodic I guess ) that's when Kirk got in trouble ...

I do look back now on some shows and stuff I have from the 80's and cringe here and there ... but to say he totally sucks .... meh

I think the good stuff is on the tracks you never hear ...

the solo on Dyer's Eve from AJFA is still one of my favorite solo's ever

+1. I saw an interview a few months ago with the fellow that recorded their first album and they had to bring in another bassist behind Nikki's back b/c he couldn't play! Hard to believe he could write anything.

Being able to play clean and write basic progressions/riffs aren't the same thing. I could see how he could write a basic riff but still play sloppy. Crue's riffs are basic. I could see Nikki writing them. I'm sure he at least came up with the basic progressions though. The interview I saw where he said the band's success was his songwriting, neither Mick or Tommy argued or even so much as rolled their eyes at the comment.

Yes that tricky 1-4-5 progression....Dick Six is a true visionary
