+1. I saw an interview a few months ago with the fellow that recorded their first album and they had to bring in another bassist behind Nikki's back b/c he couldn't play! Hard to believe he could write anything.

Being able to play clean and write basic progressions/riffs aren't the same thing. I could see how he could write a basic riff but still play sloppy. Crue's riffs are basic. I could see Nikki writing them. I'm sure he at least came up with the basic progressions though. The interview I saw where he said the band's success was his songwriting, neither Mick or Tommy argued or even so much as rolled their eyes at the comment.

Yes that tricky 1-4-5 progression....Dick Six is a true visionary

Hehe I didn't say I agreed with him. ;) 1-4-5's equate to hit songs if done properly so I wouldn't put anyone down for writing using that formula. I tend to like the listenability (word?) of easy 4/4 1-4-5 type songs over 11/8 songs written using some Hungarian scale. I appreciate complicated stuff but simple songs are more appealing as they tend to have more of a "hook" factor to them.

And regardless of what anyone thinks, Mick Mars is still ten times better than Kirk Hammett, CC Deville, or Tom Morello.

I'll give you CC Deville but not the other 2. Morello has more creative riffs up his sleeve than Mars. And while Kirk has his issues with vibrato and bending his playing on Master Of Puppets blows the shit out of anything Mick has ever done. Just my opinion of course.

Yup. Saying Mars is better than Kirk is asinine.

To each his own Chris, but saying that Mick is 10x better then Kirk is just crazy. Kirk maybe a sloppy player, but he has written some great solos compared to Mick. Every solo that Mick has played/written is just plain boring.

Oh, of course "to each his own!" I'm just stating my opinion. I realize other people feel differently and that's cool with me. I just hate Kirk's phrasing. To me, it all sounds unnatural or something. Pretty much like wanking that wasn't really thought out. It doesn't "speak" to me, I guess. No biggy.

The unnaturalness that you are hearing is Kirk playing out of key or using a rooted major scale when the tune is in a minor key. I think he is one of the worst guitar players of all time. At least Mick played in key.
BITTO DITTO DITTO +1+1 ouch!

This thread connects to my past twice. I have picked up my guitar after an 18 year break and digging it. Before Motley Crue and thanks to a magazine called The Music Connection I got a call from Tommy Lee to jam. He brought a guitar player, and the old lead guitarist {replaced by Tommy Shaw} from Styx showed up with a bass.. We got together once maybe twice. About ten years ago I noticed that guitar player was Mick Mars. Looks different without make up maybe? Some of his stuff makes me cringe {solos} Fast forward from LA to the Bay Area my singer at the time say's the singer in Metallica broke his arm and I can get you an audition. Apparently he knew the manager. His timing was off on that one allthough I didn't and still dont eat drink and sleep Metallica a couuple of months go by and they have a crash in europe somewhere, I get asked again by my friend/singer and get the phone call to learn MOP from there management. I borrow my bass players P-bass expecting three days to learn that 10 or so minute song, get a call the next morning to come to the studio the next afternoon. Not a good time for those guys after losing there best friend. 30 seconds into the song ...NEXT...My playing put a smile on Lars face, like I said it was a pretty somber moment. Did not pay much attention to Metallica either until they came on the radio and Kirk's solos sound/feel like finger nails on a chalk board!!! Well I just wanted to let you all know I agree with most of the opinions on this thread. Thanks for reading my rant.
