Honestly for the money a Kramer 84 Made in Indonesia is as good or better......


The only thing I would really look into for this money are the EVH 5150 guitars that cost the same or less as a striped....... But other than that..... The striped guitars are pretty much a fucking scam given the money.

Alder, mahogany, maple, poplar, ash? All good. Basswood? No offense to anyone here that likes it, but FUCK no. Dave Friedman calls it asswood and I agree. Mushy attack. Lifeless. Dull. Can't stand it.

I cannot scientifically say that basswood is terrible, but every guitar that I have personally played with basswood was dead

The one I'm getting is the 1983 Baretta reissue, the one in the old No Bozos ad. I can't bring myself to pay new pricing, but I will grab a used one eventually. I fondled one at Sweetwater last year and it really brought me back when my guitar teacher got one of the very first ones when I was 13.

Yeah they Reissues are pricey but You can get an "Original" for like 800 bucks and it's totally worth it or the regular Baretta for 700 bucks. The "Originals" use maple bodied too so there is a Whole lotta sustain as well and a "heavier" but brighter tone.

I just got an 84 Open Box for 600 last year and it's fucking awesome, couldnt be happier and yeah IMO for the money a much better alternative and value relative to a Striped Series.

I wanted a Kramer after playing a Pacer....... Thought I would want neck pup but tbh it's great as is, so resonant and full of life with one pickup.


It's just a fucking Beast *_*

I already have an '83 Pacer with the single humbucker and the white paint is totally aged to cream color now. But that No Bozos Baretta has a different headstock shape than all the others. It's very subtle, but it's the only other guitar I lust for.

I was in that camp as well with bad experiences with Basswood over the years but I just picked up an EVH Wolfgang special and it is quite resonant and not dead or muddy at all.... I was shocked as hell when I picked it up and played it, it's also a goldtop with no maple top.

John Suhr builds most of his moderns with basswood, so Basswood must be hit or miss.

I've always had bad luck with basswood. Poplar too. I'm sure it's possible to get a piece that is really resonant, but that hasn't been my experience including with some high end guitars like an Anderson Drop Top that was only OK.

It may have been largely luck that they were picked, but it really does seem like alder, ash, mahogany, and maple are the nuts for electric guitar bodies and necks.
