Bottom line:

Great amps don't need overdrive or distortion pedals, kills the full range tone in most cases.

Now a great clean boost can definitely be another story.

+1  cant live without my BB

Xotic BB preamp or RC Booster will work amazingly!

I have good results with the BB and AC on both my Herbert and VH4. I don't use them all the time, but I do like mix it up every now and then.

I haven't played a Herbie, but I tried boosting channels 3/4 of my VH4 with a Boss OD3, Boss GE7 and Zoom Powerdrive just to see how it would sound, and didn't like it at all. Never tried boosting channels 1/2 though. Diezels have so much preamp gain on tap and great power sections that they really don't need the pedals. I haven't touched my EMG loaded Explorer in ages because even just active pickups were too much output for my tastes. To each their own though.

Andy Wood only uses he OCD on the clean channel, I guess thats why i love boogies so much they take pedals so damn well!

this is true, however i recently started working with xotic and have switched to a bb preamp on the clean channel, and WOW! it kills for that bluesy timmons drive, sounds like landau kinda drive too. Sometimes i use a barber tone press on ch 3 with the gain back around 11:30 or noon for a more compressed fusion tone. But diezels on there own have so much tone, i never use a drive on the gain channels.
