Is it my imagination or do a lot of these impulses sound like the highs are shaved off/ rounded off? They get rave reviews but apart from blix on this forum and what I have heard Pete thorn do, I feel a lot of demos I hear are missing the bite that I hear when I mic my own cab.

Also interested if any of you feel like your line out might be responsible for shaving highs or if line out from the power amp to speaker really make that much difference in terms of how they are designed? most line outs seem fairly simple. I'm asking because my hotplate seems to be toast where the line out is concerned. Still works as a load and attenuator but the line out is cutting in and out. I'm thinking of picking up one of these to do the job to sit between amp and hotplate set to load: http://davidbrayamps.com/lo1.html . Quick and dirty.. and not 200$+ like the suhr offering.

I have a few of the ownhammer impulses, and I've had a similar experience with many that I've tried. Sometimes it's not a bad thing, but other times it is. I actually prefer the single mic impulses to the studio ones most of the time for that very reason. I usually stick with the 2, 3, or 4 position as well. That said, I prefer the two notes wosiii stuff. They have a more open top end than any other commercial impulses I've run across.

A bad line out could effect if too, but my guess is the biggest contributor to what you're experiencing is the resistive load in that hotplate. Resistive loads can shave a healthy does of your top end off. I experienced the same thing using my cab clone as a load, so I decided to slap a spectrum analyzer on it in my DAW, and there was a pretty significant roll-off starting somewhere around 5-6k. I started putting a high shelf on around the same spot of the roll-off, and that helped.

Well the way OwnHammers are set up is as follows: "1" = deadcenter of cone, "2" =farther out..."5" (or later "9") = outside of speaker. I pretty much only use the M75s, which are somewhat dark anyway; hence I'm typically using the "1" version of the speaker IR. However, the other IRs OwnHammer puts out like G12Ms and V30s are plenty bright.

I agree with Bronco. I like the Ownhammer stuff. I have the Modern collection from the Marshall cab. Creambacks /scumbacks/etc sounds smooth, but I like them through WOS by two notes. The V30 is brighter/more bite. but I tend to use the Live impulses...like those. I just go from my preamp out of my 5150III, so maybe an attenuator line out sounds different too. Also, maybe try a clean boost? Should do the trick.

Well the good news is that a bit of contact spray on the line out pot of my hotplate seems to have made my line out usable again. At least that saves me some cash..

So far my only experience is with the redwirez free greenback cab as I haven't had a chance to put a few other free libraries out through their paces. I've liked the sound of blackbacks before which is what peaked my interest in the ownhammers. So when you say the single impulses vs. the studio ones, are you saying the studio packs are already EQ'd and more "studio ready" in that they are ready to be put in a mix? The single 9$ a pop cabs would be more imperfect and raw like the redwirez stuff?

I don't use the line out from my attenuator (Aracom) anymore. Great attenuator but using a separate passive direct box in between has been much better. More clear/defined. I think the transformers used make an impact. I reached out to a few manufacturers. Whirlwind was most responsive and said their Director+ was the best bang for the buck for getting a signal from an amp output. It's passive. No need to go active for a high level signal such as an amp output. I've been happy with it.

Oh I never use the LO on my HotPlate. I have a Suhr LO box, which is amazing. Also, the LOs my Friedman and SLO are pretty comparable.

By single impulses I was referring to the impulses with only one mic. The studio impulses are a combination of mics, and I don't think there is any additional eq. In general, I find the studio mixes to be fuller with less top end when compared to the single mic impulses from the same pack. Of course the results could be the opposite if the single mic impulse you're comparing to just has a single r121, but you know what mean.

The Hotplate line out sounds quite dark. I dunno why. The difference between that line out and say, the Suhr line out box is big.

How is the line out on the Rivera rock rusher? I wonder if I am gonna drop 200 on a line out, I might as well just get a better attenuator while at it. What other options would I have between amp and can for a line out that doesn't rob high end?
