I know... shut up already and CLIPS!!!! Sorry, but I just don't have time right now to record anything...
Anyway...
Ok, I don't know what Mark Stowe over at OX4 Pickups is doing with these things, but I'm friggin' amazed...
Some of you might remember me going off on how great these low output PAF clones sounded when I put a set in an R9 I picked up in an earlier thread. Well, I liked them so much, I decided to try them out in my Charvel Custom Shop Grover Legacy Star. This guitar was ok, but never really sounded that great. I was replacing the neck with a fatter, wider one (1 3/4" nut width) that I had Musikraft make and put the pickups in at the same time. It's crazy, but the guitar sounds unbelievably good to me now - totally alive and different from before. Incredible clarity in the bridge with chords, but tons of sustain for legato lead work and this great presence. The neck has this incredible spank, but still tons of sustain, even in the lower gain mode of my amp. It sounds like a really great neck single coil in a strat, but no hum and a bit more thickness.
I'm getting these great tones out of this guitar when it sounded kinds meh before (even with a Super D in the bridge - my go to pickup). What is really funny is that the neck I had made was not accurate for this guitar. There is a huge gap between the neck and the body, I had to put the neck on at a slight angle to get the strings to line up and even now the high E is closer to the edge of the fretboard at the high frets compared to the low frets. Also, the strings don't even come close to lining up with the pickup pole pieces, especially on the high B and E. Was a total pain getting this neck to work at all - shims at the nut and neck/body. Yet it still sounds incredible now because of these pickups and it plays better (for me) because I like fatter necks. Look at this:
Totally should sound like crap right? I'm telling you guys, these pickups sound incredible and although I was getting into higher output pickups like the Super D, I like these way better and they sound just as "gainy" if that makes sense. I highly recommend you check 'em out. I've tried lots of PAF clones over the years and I've never experienced anything like this... Just for the record, Mark is not paying me to say any of this - I don't get any discount at all - I'm paying full prices per pair...
Oh... and some shots of the guitar with the new pickups and neck. Yeah, that is a full titanium Floyd and nut... Man I'm loving it now!
Oh... and the glamour shot... funny how different lighting brings out the grain in the wood differently
