You can always run the amp thru a loadbox then direct into cab sims. It can sound really good. I used to use my old J Station that way....cranked amp into hotplate on load into J Station set to direct and then pick cab model of choice....pretty cool.

I had both the 03 and 04 side by side to compare. Ultimetaly i kept the 03 and sent the 04 back. Here are some of my thoughts. I really liked the controls on the 04, and the ability to blend in the direct non filtered sound was a big bonus, specially for cleans. But test after test, the 03 just more defined and less muddy then the 04 for anything with distortion. I wish i still had the comparison clips still, perhaps its still up on gearslutz.com

as others have complained, the 04 does sound a little different then the 03, more controls and possible settings, but still a little different, so they are not the same. 03 is pretty much plug and play.

that being said, while using for live it worked well, I never really loved the recoded sound by itself, but blending with a mic'd track it worked really well, by itself, it was slightly grainy, not very open, and no room. What I found was taht the brighter the amp, it sounded better with the palmer. It loved the fender i tried it with. But I think there may be a better option out there now as far as DI goes. hope that helps.

So here's a question for you all. I've been thinking of getting a Palmer PGA-04, PDI-03, GT SEII, or Marshall SE100.

I have a grendel dead room that I use today w/ 2 mic's. I was wanting to get a speaker emulator to use along w/ that to blend.

I'd like something that has some tweakability, which is why i'm leaning against not getting the PDI-03, but it's great tonally.

I'm using a CL80, K100, or T75 in my iso cab today, and was wanting a speaker emulator to get a bit more "grind and bite" in some of my distorted tones.

Let the recommendations commence. I use a Egnater M4 and Randall RT2/50..or a Egnater Mod50.

I've had/have all the Palmer stuff. The original 03 sounds better than any of the others. Whether they are suppose to be the same or not. I also tried about 50 IRs in the Axe Fx. I kept the Palmer 03. Again, some of what you like is going to be based on taste, and what you are running into it.

I realy liked the palmer blended with a mic, it blended very well, no phase things that I noticed. Once again, I preffered the sound 9/10 of the 03, even though the o4 has more options. However any tonal changes need to be made you can make on your amp you know. the 04 basially has a continual filter, where the 03's filter is set. Still I found the 04 generallyi more mushy. but I liked it better for cleans with the ability to add in the non filtered sound.

I can't remember off teh top of my head, but i thikn a new cab sim came out that is supposed to be awesome. wish i can remember, perhaps if it comes up i will track this down. I know the motherload came out whith the element or something, not sure how that works with a mic'd track, i know peeps have said that the orignal motherload had some issues when blended with a live mic.

I like the idea of using cab IR's, this in reality is probally the best bet, as you can find much more usuable cab's, not to mention stereo sometimes.

Badcat has a load box out that is supposed to be state of the art....havent tried yet...

I've got a PGA-04 that has seen very little use that I'll offer for sale. I need to research some prices or if anyone is interested shoot me an offer.
