Paypal gift

I agree.

I'd much rather not use them, but through eBay they became the only way that people felt comfortable sending money to random people. I've sold stuff through USPS money order before and that's awesome, but if you ask for that no one is going to do it because it won't seem right. It'll feel like a scam because PayPal is the standard, so you must have an unscrupulous reason for not using the standard practice, right?

I look at it like this, I'd rather screw the apathetic mega corporation out of a few dollars than risk them screwing me out of a couple hundred. But again, that's me. I understand how someone could feel wrong doing that.

Somebody mentioned in the previous PP thread that a payment made via Gift could be withdrawn or refunded at the buyers request long after the items have been shipped leaving the Seller high and Dry with no recourse whatsoever so a regular PP transaction might be safest for both parties.

if I want something I'll eat the fees to have the protection ...

I only do it if it is someone I know well. I have done it on some low dollar items, like pickups or pedals if they have a good reputation. High dollar amp, guitar, or pedal? No way unless youare my actual brother. Guessing some people got scammed, there is always one asshole.

If you don't want to pay for the service, don't use it. It's not like the fees are a secret.

It's a service I don't mind paying for, if I feel the need to cover my (substantial) ass during a transaction. In most cases on this board, I have no problem paying in "gift" form, tho that's not what it is called now.

IMO 3% isn't much to pay...even on a $2,000+ amp...for the protection I get from paypal.

I'm sure the other forum got sick of hearing complaints and dealing with idiots.

So sending or receiving cash instantly across the country should be free, and insured against getting screwed over by the other party regardless? You guys crack me up. Y'all must be the same guys that buy an amp for $2000 one week then relist in the classifieds 4 days later for $2300! Flipping gear is a money losing venture, always will be. If you can't afford some loss you should stay out of the higher end gear market.

I'm a grown goddamn man and can't determine when it's worth the risk to use PayPal gift for myself, tyvm. I typically don't use the gift option, but don't tell me how to use my money. TGP sucks anyway.

Well then as a buyer, if you can't afford to pay the PayPal fees associated with you demanding to use that service, you should stay out of the higher end gear market.

I like the idea that PP fees are a seller's expense. I should try to argue that the next time I get gas with my debit card, see if the gas station will pick up the 3% credit fee.

Exactly. Maybe stores will start paying sales tax for me too!

Everyone wants every damn thing free. When I had my SLO for sale on here I had it priced very reasonably and included the PayPal fee and shipping into the price. A freaking mint 2012 SLO to your door for 2900.00 is a decent price in my book. I even said I was firm on the price and no trades. I got nothing but low ball offers and trade offers, so I dropped the for sale add after a couple of weeks. Forget it, I'll keep my SLO. I didn't want or need to sell it that bad anyway.

The reason you didn't sell it is your price. Used SLOs go for 24-2600. Only way you would get 2900 is if someone refused to be patient and wait for someone else to pop one up for 2500. You can sell your stuff for whatever you want, but facts are facts. Since 2014 I've bought and sold 3 SLOs, paid 2500, 2200, and 2500. Sold 2 for 2500, and still have the 3rd.

I've paid for some big ticket items with money orders on this forum. Luckily we have for the most part a good group of people here that are trustworthy.

Agreed. I'm semi interested in buying an SLO, but they're all overpriced. There was a very nice, newer SLO on ebay recently that started around $2,000 and I think ended at less than $2,300. It's not just SLOs, there's a lot of stuff rotting in the classified where sellers are unrealistic as to what its worth.

What people don't understand is that it is the buyer's legal obligation to pay the tax. The store is required to withhold it. If you buy something from another State, that State has no obligation to withhold tax in a State that it does not have nexus with. Even if they don't collect sales tax from you, you as the buyer are still legally required to submit the sales tax to your State. Noone ever does and it's difficult to enforce, but there is nonetheless legal exposure to the buyer to pay sales tax to his State for everything he buys regardless of whether sales tax was collected by the seller.

Anyone worried about 3% is being idiotic.

Including the buyer. So if it's idiotic for the seller to worry about it, it's also idiotic for the buyer. Buyers of used gear these days expect FREE shipping. FREE packing. FREE Paypal. And so on. Each one of those things takes a chunk out of the sale price. Add it all up and you are close to, if not OVER, $200. Then take into account the low-ball offers and a $2000 sale is now $1500. And it's not about making a profit. Selling used gear isn't about that (for me). It's simply about getting what's fair.

I was being facetious, dude. I know how sales tax works...
