Any argument for the PCM 42? I know they hold their value and there must be a reason for it, anyone know the reasoning here?

they're just great sounding delays. A lot of those old processors have a low bit rate that just does something ear-pleasing to the signal, even when bypassed.

The old Lexicon stuff ( PCM 41 / 42, PCM 70 etc..) are some of the best sounding delay / FX units ever made. Just incredible sounding stuff. 
The only thing to keep in mind when considering a purchase of the older Lexicon gear, is that there are a lot of parts inside that are now unobtainium. There is always the possibility that the next time you use it will be the last time it works, and it becomes a doorstop. Understand what you may be getting into, and don't overpay...But holy shit, do they sound good....
I have a PCM70 that I've owned for years, and the day it stops working will be a very sad day indeed, but every time I run something through it, I just smile like a little kid at Christmas. I keep it set on Prgm #1 Auto Delay, which is a stereo delay that syncs to midi, and it's 8th notes on the left and quarter notes on the right.
Good on everything but ice cream

I still use my PCM42 when I run mono. I havent really noticed too much difference in overloading the input in a guitar rig. That seems to really work on vocals more than anything (ala Michael Wagner). Its a rack mounted no nonsense delay, so its basically a set and forget kind of thing. The delayed note has a very distinct, warm sound as opposed to say the TC2290 which is more transparent. Series or parallel, sounds good either way.

I have a PCM 41 and it holds it's value because it has a unique design. The envelope modulation is an amazing source for subtle to erratic modulation. I've had mine for nearly 20 years and the only issue I've ever encountered was the modulation speed would be very non linear. I pulled it apart last year and simply cleaned the pot - just like new. You can hook up a volume pedal to sweep the delay time in guitar rigs. The sound is not a pristine digital sound and it's not like a bucket brigade but somewhat sort of in between in longer delay times.
