Thoughts on newer metal tones....?

In other words, nothing new, 95% of everything is crap just like it’s like it’s always been, but these days the crap is homogenized crap, which means it’s not even unique or interesting crap.
My last few craps have been real interesting. Time to schedule another fecal occult blood test then name my laptop metal band after it

It does seem like the majority of bands today look like they’re filled with the kind of people who have never lived actual lives or have anything to say, but rather they seem like people who listen to metal and want to participate in it too, so they spend just enough time away from buying funko pops and pretending to be a social justice activists which they think means ā€œreposting political memes on twitterā€ (how stunning and brave) for them to buy just enough prepackaged modeler patches and drum samples to record 10 seconds of guitar and copy paste their way through a whole song and sound totally pro man, exactly the same as everybody else. It’s just exhausting. Fake aggression, fake anger, screamed exactly on queue, pristine copy pasted guitars and overly produced everything else.
Hey, when my Windows laptop decides to update and kill my plugin in the middle of my private live-streamed ā€œgigā€, I can assure you there is nothing fake whatsoever about the rage that ensues while I replug everything into a backup iPhone/Bluetooth speaker backup rig

honestly, they would probably be more interesting then archspire or whatever godforsaken modern "metal" band gets posted next

this shit is just completely exhausting to listen to

it has no dynamics, no emotion, no implied aesthetics, no color, no anything except for midi instruments and quantized 5150 tones with someone screaming like an emo bitch over it

It's like listening to a root canal, and having people come up to you and ask "man you like root canals, don't you? listen to this amazing root canal"

Here’s the isolated click track Archspire used to track their new album. Definitely sounds like a drill when the BPM get up there

Not for everyone but this is new:

@bubbastain - great points on Mastodon

@napalmdeath - Just saw Killswitch last night. Still love those guys but I too like Howards voice a bit better than Jesse's. :dunno:

I love 311. However with full bloom, I couldn't listen to it more than twice. Major flop. The songs struggle to have identity. Their previous album only being slightly better.

Interesting. I think it is a great album and the songs have tons of identity. It def took more than one or two spins. I grew on me. I really like it now. Still cranking out relevant and original music after all these years. I don't even own the prior alum. Mosaic was really good though.

As much as I love metal, I dont think I have any experience after the Down Nola album of '95.
Maybe the one after it too.

The only modern being Megadeth System Has Failed You and Judas Priest Firepower.

I love Mosaic! Forever Now is always playing in my head and I'm not upset about it

Yes because what we really need is another metal album with some modded Marshall's, dude's wearing the cringiest shit ever and singers that sound like their balls are in a vice. THAT's the good shit. :ROFLMAO:

I’m definitely a fan of some of the bands.., but a lot of it is bands that have really been around forever. So one of those, is it actually new? I mean decapitated has been around forever, kind of changed direction still sound killer. MLc Vogg here

Retromorphosis (spawn of possession new band) they always used the triaxis not sure here

Whitechapel rectos I think?

Cattle decapitation with the hiwatt super hi

Dying fetus…. Can’t go wrong (Engl savage I think)

Psycroptic (playing is out of this world.., think he used the 5153)

you mean like this?

Or this?

Or this?

And a peavey 5150 or Rectifier is a copy of an SLO which at it's core is a... modded marshall :ROFLMAO: :hys:

Five Finger Death Punch is fucking awful. They're one of the biggest offenders of generic, watered down, safe dog shit music. I know you're poking fun at them (rightfully so) but everytime I see them mentioned it makes me irrationally angry

That White Chapel album is heavy. Think they use rectos, purple nightmares and forgot what else. There's 3 guitar players

We're always discussing the 80s and some thrash tones here. What are your thoughts on more modern metal tones? I actually enjoy some of the new artist and tones...

That Bleed from within albums sounds great, guitars are super heavy but still super clear and articulated.

I don't know, a lot of these bands sound like they sharing the same recording engineer, gear and recording equipment, 8/9 string multiscale guitars with fishman pickups with double boosted amps with an EQ and/or sonic maximizer in the loop with ungoldly amounts of low end and annoying twang-y type of tone and who knows what types of cabs/speakers.

There was a few examples of better tone shared mostly being Sylosis and the power metal/symphonic bands, hold on a minute, I gotta go yell at that cloud and get those damn kids off my lawn :checkthisout:

I love some of those bands like Architects, Bleed From Within and Sylosis, but Sylosis is probably the only tone I'd feel comfortable playing. Some of that other stuff is heavily catered towards real low tuned stuff and doesn't sound good outside of those tunings.

That being said, this album came out a few months ago and its filled with killer riffs, tone, vocals, etc.. It's not like much stuff coming out, which is why I've listened to it nearly every day since it's release. Just regular Gibson SGs, Les Pauls, Orange Rockerverb and SLO100.

Re-visiting a slightly older favorite. A good car sing along too.
