I recently acquired a Peavey 5150 (VooDoo modded) and it has JJ 6L6GC's in it. Not sure how old the tubes are but the low end seems a little loose/flubby. What do you guys like for power tubes? I play heavy rock stuff so I like my sound to be tight a and punchy.

The 5150 is about the tightest chugging high gain amp out there. I'm not familiar with what the VooDoo mod does, but I've done a handful of my own 5150 mods, and I always go back to stock. I've tried a few different tubesets in mine, I ended up with Winged C, but I'm not sure they will have much of an effect on the tightness of the low end like you are looking for. What's your signal path like from pickup to speaker? Amp settings?

What speakers are you using?

I decided I wanted mine to sound as close to stock/new as possible. They shipped with Chinese tubes(at least mine did) so I bought some Ruby power tubes and JJ preamp. The old tubes were very old. Maybe 2002? And I had Boogie power tubes in there. New tubes made zero difference. Amp sounds the same. Which is fine because it rocks!

My 6505+ is stock. I cannot imagine modding it.
What for? Couldn't be better.

Musician's Friend has matched quads of Ruby 6L6's for $50. The distributor for Ruby tubes warranties them for 6 months. Just in case you were looking for some inexpensive tubes.

My guitar is an alder strat with a Duncan JB.
Cab is a Marshall 4x12 with greenbacks.
Pre amp tubes are... V1=Electro Harmonix 12ax7EH, V2,3 & 4= ARS 12ax7a/7025, V5=Sovtek 12ax7wa.
I'm thinking the tubes are just getting old and may need to be replaced.

The Ruby GSM-STR are the best for the money. I like a lot the TAD 6L6 GCSTR, very tight low end!
If yo want it raw and roar go with the Sovtek WXT+

A 5150 w/ JJ's shouldn't be loose or flubby. Either it needs fresh tubes, or something's wrong with the amp...

Tubes are probably old, they do get bland and mushy with age.. JJ 6L6s are not the tightest out of other offerings... I like The Sovtek WXT+ in 5150s and also the TADs are good.

Ed had those EH 6L6's in his Fender 5150 FWIW.

There's an epic thread here talking about his tone, cig burns and crack pipe marks on the tolex.

Sovtek wxt+ for this guy!
stiffest, tightest sounding power tubes for that amp, which i like.
