I can't speak about avatar cabs because i've never player one. I would assume that 2 1x12's would give you the same results as a 2x12 (especially with closed backs).
I can comment on the Peavey thou. I think that a classic is the best budget rig you can buy! Great sounds in that man....and with a boost it sounds even better! I've seen those things being rocked in blues bands as well as hard rock bands!

It's portable but it is still 3 pieces. If I was going that route I would use a 2X12 instead.

I gigged with a Rivera M60 combo for a while and it had two speaker outs so that you could use an extension cab (closed back) and the combo speaker (open back) at the same time. Worked out really well. FWIW.

It's a WONDERFUL rig - I use a C30 combo sitting on top of a 1x12 tweed extension cab (closed) as my "home" rig and it sounds absolutely great! (Well - once you pull out the stock speakers that is... Throw in some greenbacks and never look back!)

How's that sound for a nice portable rig? The cabs could be closed back, which should retain some level of punch and low end, right?

I thought about that laying in bed last night. That sounds like it could be a pretty cool little rig. A mini-stack. Any thoughts?

PS - I get to use the Twin tonight at a gig, but I'm not expecting it to satisfy me. We'll see... I'm already planning the next steps, though. I could get this Classic 30 head and two Avatar 1x12" cabs for the same price (or maybe even less.)

the C30 head only has 1 16ohm output. don't know how you could power 2 1x12s.

Great point. The C30 combo has a 8ohm and 16ohm output tap on the transformer, but for some reason the head only has a 16ohm tap. To use the 2 112's you would have to buy/build a series box and run the 2 8ohm 112's in series. For this setup I would just go for a 212, that has the 2 8ohm speakers in it in series (like the classic series 212)

I'd think you could get away with just one cabinet. You could take your 2x12 when you wanted or needed the 2 speakers, and then just take a 1x12 if you thought you could get buy with one speaker. If you get a chance you might try a 1x12 Thiele cabinet instead of the avatars. That's what I use for a combo amp. A Mesa MkIIC and a Thiele and the little thing sounds HUGE IMHO. I had a MkIV combo for a while and the amp sounded great plugged into a 4x12 or the thiele, but I didn't like the way it sounded by itself with it's open back. BUT with the thiele under it or beside it the Closed back/open back combination kind of canceled out the negatives of the open back and sounded killer.

But... If you had 2 1x12's you could plug the power block into one of them and have a stereo wet/dry thing going but that starts defeating the purpose of simplifying doesn't it?

Hey Chris, Fazios used to have a classic 30 head on top of a bunch of open back mojo 2x12 cabs loaded with various celestion and eminence speakers. I found some really great clean and dirty tones with that rig. I liked the v30, the private jack and the texas heat with it the best. The classic 30 gets a lot of respect on TGP as well. Might be your ticket...

...DSL. :D

And I wouldn't count the twin out entirely, I'm sure it'll do the job just fine at your gig (at worst). It might surprise you actually. I sat in with one of my teachers' bands at a bar a few weeks back and he was running an original BF twin with an R9 and some pedals. I brought my 335 with me and was getting tones I really dug into his twin with NO problems, honestly.

Chris get a ported 1x12. The VHT 1x12 I have sounds huge for what it is. It doesn't sound like a 4x12 but can keep up with one.

I got to check out a Diezel Herbert through a Thiele cab not too long ago at a little get together and man, that thing impressed everyone. That cab sounded much bigger than anyone expected!

Hmmmmm.

I tell you the tiny terror through the VHT cab sounds way bigger than you would ever think it would. I think the classic 30 through a ported 1x12 would be enough for you if you like the classic 30.

Yea - if you are talking light and portable, how about the Orange Tiny Terror? I haven't played one but the video clips of it I've heard sound really good!!!

Thump,

Here's a little story...my band opened up for another band in some bar we had never played before in Memphis. I show up with NASA like I used to do. The other guitar player in the other band showed up with a Classic 30 combo and a import strat. This was in my younger "cork sniffing" years. I remember talking to him and was more or less an arrogant prick because I was playing Les Pauls and Marshalls.

They MOPPED the floor with us. The sound guy was all over me about my rig. I was blowing foam off the beer in the first few tables to get my sound. It was a bad gig. This dude came out after us and had a great sounding rig mic'd.

I still dig my Classic 30 and it's my great little "quick gig rig". I have the combo and would have no problem playing any gig with it.

Of course, I don't like the stock tubes and stuff that come with it and I did replace the original speaker that came with it.

I'm all for it  For a lower cost rig, it's hard to beat. Some of the best local players I've ever heard have used Classic 30 and 20's in their rigs and they sounded awesome.

I say go for it, and use the money you save to buy some new chaps

i've been doing something similar to that for awhile now.. and with good results.. imo.
i've been using a roland cube 60 for gigs and added a 1x12 homebrew extension cab for when i needed a little more. it's a simple plywood cab that i built to the dimesions of my laney aor combo enclosure.. so it's oversized. the speaker was an old eminence that i got cheap.. so that's what i was using. the eminence didn't have the the tone or output i was looking for so recently bought a used vin 30 as a replacement. WOW did that make a difference. the vin has slightly more output (maybe a db or two) and mids and highs than the stock cube speaker.. but the voicingings are very similar. add the extension cab and it sounds like a 2x12.
haven't tried it at a gig yet since i added the vin 30.. but i expect it will have no trouble cutting through a mix.

Thump you are really reaching back with the C30. I thought you had one in your 5150 days before the marshall DSLs....

I am a big fan of C30's. I would suggest you just get the combo and get a closed back 112 cab if you go that route. I like the mix of the open back and closed back sounds...

I agree. Then you might as well get a DSL for those other cabs you have lying around. :D
