Cant sleep, so I decided to give the XXX a workout. Damn these amps are badass. I like it every bit as much as the 5150. Things got some killer fucking tones in there.

My buddy loves his. Has matched it up against a Single Recto, 5150 I, Randall V2, and now a 5150 II. The XXX just fits his sound best (although he's been using the 5150II more recently).

the cleans are lifeless, but the ODs sound pretty darn good, yes.

I agree with you completely. I think the xxx gets bashed more than it should. I actually like it more than the 5150. If you spend some time with it there are some great tones in that amp.

I put a lower gain 12ax7 in v1 on mine, the crunch channel is way more useable this way. GT12ax7m is what I put in there I think.

My major complaint with the xxx was the trucker chick face plate. If you tape up the logo and spray the face plate black the trucker chicks are toned down and most people can't see them. I think the amp looks great in all black, and it only cost about $2 to make the change.

Are the cleans as bad as the 5150?
How is the lead channel? Does the voicing have that open wah sound like the JSX?

My only real problem with the amp is that it has a bit of a congested/heavily compressed sound to it. It's not my amp, so I haven't played around with settings/tubes a lot (and neither has my buddy), but it would piss me off if it was my amp...
The mudflap girls are really cheesy. Didn't someone turn the board around and just had black wood showing? I also think a Recto/Marshall style woven look would be great...

I always laugh when people's biggest complaints about an amp are the asthetics. If that's the biggest problem with the amp then you're doing pretty damn well!
