Peavey XXX vs Peavey 3120

Hey all! I was looking into getting a 3120 and am seeing a lot of reviews, info, etc saying that this is just a "re-badged" version of the original XXX model. I am seeing most folks say the only difference is that the 3120 comes with EL34s and the XXX comes with 6L6s. Is there any truth to this? Are they exactly the same aside from the shell and tubes? I appreciate the info!

I believe that they are indeed the same other than shipping with 34's.

I think the gain stage is a bit different too, my friends 3120 didn't sound as super saturated as the triple x I had. Not sure though.

I had a XXX and a 3120 at the same time at my house both loaded with EL34's. Same amp.

Dont know about the 3120 but the XXX loade with KT 77s is a mean sounding amp. I sent mine over to Brian at BFG and he turned it into a whole different animal. It slays now and is one of the best sounding amps I have now.

Right up there with the Herbie, Savage, Ultralead and crushes the cobra now...

I've had a xxx 2x12 combo for years and it didn't come to life until I threw some JJEl34's in the power section and a JJ ECC832 in v2 to tame the gain. Get whatever's cheaper, so long as it has the el34's (I haven't tried kt77's, but I've heard other xxx owners speak highly of them).
