What to buy? '74 reissue, script with led, EVH, DOD 201?

For the classic Van Halen tone.
I'll put it into a looper, so true bypass and led not matter.

The DODs sound great, but the Whirlwind orange box phaser kicks ass.

I'll use it in front, but with a looper. I ordered the Musicom-Lab MKV.

The 74 custom shop is the best one and i have owned all of the mxr versions. I had mine modded my analogman for true bypass and led but sounds like you dont need it.

+1 on the Whirlwind
Yeah I've had the Script, Block, EVH, and Whirlwind...Whirlwind is my all time fave.

74 custom shop is the only way to go if you want that sound.

Steve

Here i can find the '74 and the Whirlwind at the same price...

Never heard about Whirlwind company before; i'll watch some vids.

sorry, i didn't read closely enough and thought you said loop!

Love the Whirlwind although haven't tried the 74CS

Depends how close you want to get to the 'classic' Van Halen tone, buy a script '70's MXR phase 90, nothing like the real thing! I love mine!, although I've heard good things about the '74 reissue

If you're going for VH, then buy what he used/uses. I have the MXR modded to VH specs (what ever that means) and it kills for that sound.

I'm sure the other pedal makers make a great sounding pedal, perhaps even better sounding in a general use. But I think it's amusing when they do comparisons, trying to get VH's sound with something that isn't what he used. It's like, "here we have Eddie's actual pedal and here we have pedal X. I really feel that pedal X has more of the VH mojo, the swirl is just warm enough and subtle, but with some bite. I just don't hear that with Eddie's pedal." "Yes, but this is literally Eddie's pedal, off of his pedal board!". "Yeah, but it's missing something, magic, or mojo, that pedal X has" "yeah, but it is literally HIS PEDAL?!"

I know that is an exaggeration, but I feel like any time VH is discussed it always turns into the aforementioned, whether its pickups, amps, guitars, pedals, etc...

If you haven't already, go try the new MXR Phase 95. It's really excellent and has a couple different sounds in it.

For those not as familiar with Whirlwind, the guy who was involved with the original design of the MXR Phase 90 is now doing Whirlwind and built the Orange Box. That's why some of us have migrated over to this one, totally chasing the original sound, and I know in my case, yes, definitely using for vintage Van Halen tones.

haha, true - but keep in mind most people are talking about his processed/recorded sound. which is not just them hearing a guitar thru the pedal thru the amp thru the speaker in the room like most of us hesr our rigs.

The original Bud Box is expensive, and i should buy it on ebay from the usa... plus shipping, taxes= ±500€

The choice is between the '74 reissue and the Whirlwind. I reading a lot of nice comments about the Orange Box; i can buy one new, here in Italy, and is a bit cheaper then the MXR reissue. Plus have the AC plug.

This  ...and to be sure, every suggestion so far is just fine, particularly for EVH. But there's just this thick, chewy texture the Whirlwind has going on.
