I'm guessing it has something to do with having a mahogany neck as apposed to maple like on a lot of other guitars

How do you know when you got a "good one"? What do you look for?

There are maple neck Les Pauls...all the Norlin era guitars are that way, as are most of the Zakk models (a copy of a Norlin with his graphics).

It's one of those "You just know" kind of moments.

I can't seem to feel-out a guitar in a store.

I have to bring it home, set it up, play it for hours through all of my licks.

Its a shame to spend 2k on a guitar and you still have to set it up.

I agree. But I don't mind setting up my guitars.

I recently picked a Suhr Modern off the rack and it was not even close to being in tune. The relief was crazy high, and the action was what I would expect on a slide guitar.

I handed to the sales guy to set it up and he just *sighed* and said there were too many guitars in the shop to take care of them all.

I just though it made sense to set them up from a "sales" standpoint.

I realize that. But MOST are mahogany

I'd get the store to get it done.

Maybe I should clarify...ALL Norlin era guitars have maple necks with rosewood (Standard or Deluxe) or Ebony (Custom) fingerboards...Norlin made LOTS of Les Pauls. In fact, lots of famous players used Norlin era maple necked LPs during their playing days...Sykes, Mick Mars, Billy Duffy, Zakk, and lots of others.

Maybe the two that I mentioned were just set up REALLY well for me and my style, which is why I fell in love with them. I played a '63 15,000 Strat at a GC 15 or so years ago, another AH HA moment...this thing played like buttah. I also played a '58 Gibson Byrdland (Nugent) that was 10,000 and it blew away 2 other Byrdlands in the same store, one being a '68 and the other from the 70s.

Back in the 70's, nearly every LP you pulled off the rack played great, and sounded fabulous! They were heavier, but man did they rock!

Norlins.

Maybe in the used section. LP Standards are north of $3K now. Every Les Paul in my local GC(s) are unplayable. They tell me they have their 'in house' tech set them up, but I guess that's what you get when the tech calls himself 'Big Daddy' lol.

I think that is indicative of GC. To me that is a plus, because they sit on the floor and the managers eventually slash the price to dump them. I bought a 90's USA Charvel for $380 off of GC's used site. When I received I learned why. The action was completely screwed, the trem was setup horribly, and the strings were rusted. It looked like it had been in someone's basement for years and they traded it in. I took it home, took it apart, replaced the electronics and pickups and set it up to my liking. So now I have a killer Charvel, with new pickups and electronics that I have a total of $500 in. I'm sure that the Gibson's are in the same state and to me, with a little elbow grease will be killer guitars for a steal.

I NEVER pick up a guitar anywhere and think its gonna be set up , or ever REMOTELY set up like I want it. I just bought a used LP Custom from GC, was in there FOREVER with the worst set up, ugly creme plastics etc. I rehabbed the whole guitar. And now...its this:

This.

First time I played a Suhr it was a used one at The Music Zoo here in NY. It was pretty bad. But of course, if it had been given a set up, I'm sure it would have been great. I bet all of those LPs you played would have been fine with the proper attention. Really, what do you expect off the shelf? The store isn't even climate controlled.

Every guitar needs a set up. And not just one.
