Played a JCM 900 at rehearsal last night

I don't know...I've played more than one model and they've all sounded gash. :confused:

I clearly remember when the JCM2000 line came out at the end of the 90's, they sounded worlds better than the 900's. Pure tube tone, no buzz.
 
This is how you dial in a JCM900:

Gain: dimed
Bass: dimed
Mids: noon
Treble: OFF
Presence: OFF

All done :doh:

I used one at a rehearsal studio before I had my "band rig." With my active pickup equipped baritone, it was definitely a joke.

The other guitarist, who brought his rig kept laughing at me.

I kept screaming across the room, "WHAT?!? YOU AFRAID OF LOW GAIN?!? I'M NOT AFRAID OF LOW GAIN!" :lol: :LOL:

The TSL I made the mistake of purchasing was absolutely dreadful, so I'll assume you're referring to the DSLs.

greetings from switzerland! .... ive been using a jcm 900 dual reverb slaved into a jcm 800 plexi reissue for the passed 2 and a half weeks on tour in europe and im making due with my delay / tuner and borrowing Adam from pro pains bbe green screamer to boost it for leads.... its not that bad - but not my top pic.... you can make it work....

here is a pic from my rig for this european tour we are on right now... :rock:
 
When I used my 50 watt 900, I plugged straight into the amp and out to a 1960A cab. I also ran from the direct out of the head into one side(50 watts) of my Marshall 9005 tube power amp and that powered the other 1960A cab. Running it like this beefed it up quite a bit.

as i have said..ive owned a few and not one of em was bad....i have a friend with a 50 mkIII with a diode and it sounds KIller......as a reference i use a SLO and have for yrs...to compare....

as i have said..ive owned a few and not one of em was bad....i have a friend with a 50 mkIII with a diode and it sounds KIller......as a reference i use a SLO and have for yrs...to compare....

With the right setting, a great player will still sound great through it. No doubt. It would however be foolish to settle on it just to prove a point. Personally, with so much great affordable gear out there, I will not just make do with any amp (even though I often do, and I still enjoy playing). We are spoilt for choice, so why not take it.

Of course... If one likes the JCM 900.. Hey :thumbsup:
 
As much as I was happy with the tone I had with my 900 rig 20 years ago, I'm sure if I played that rig now and compared it to what I'm playing now, I'm pretty sure it would come up way short when just playing alone. Then again, I've heard many tones that I did not like at all when played alone sound excellent in a band setting though.

Though it wasn't exactly what I had, I did have a 50 watt 900 MKii head at my house last year. Sounded good. Then I played my Splawn 50 Competition and it made the 900 sound not very good in comparison.
 
With a few simple mods it's actually a good amp. It's no 2203, but I've come to love my 100 watt Dual Reverb after the mods.

There was this rehearsal studio that I played at regularly that had several and I when we played there, I was either on the 900 or a 5150. I greatly preferred the 5150 but I was able to make the 900 work for me well enough to not really bug me considering that it was just rehearsal.. While I wouldnt call them fine, I do agree that there are just better Marshalls...

The 100w SLX was my first all tube amp. Definitely wasn't anything to write home about. Straight in sucked IMO. Even w/an EMG'd guitar there still wasn't much gain to speak of like Greg said. Boosted with a Metal Zone though and it wasn't half bad. Certainly wouldn't have stopped you in you're tracks to find out what I was playing, but it wouldn't run you out of the room either :D. I liked the SLX better than the 4100/4500 JCM900's. It had much more body & punch and not as fizzy. Much better amps out there no doubt.
