i was using one for my 74' 50w jmp for a long time at around 90-95V...loved it and actually want to buy a new one since mine crapped out on me a while ago.
I remember you telling me about using one. That clip of yours sounds cool. Do you use the neck pickup mostly?

Yes i do for the most part, but by habit i switch to other PU selections when im fiddling like this.. you can probably hear me switching from the neck position to the 2nd position ( the nasaly sound) because it gets really noisy/ratty.. im using a true single coil in the middle position on this particular guitar, but the chord at the end and following is all bridge HS-3....dude, your plexi sounds sick the way it is, definitely one of the best vintage/raw Marshall tone clips I've heard on this site from the old clips u posted....is it the volume issue thats triggering the variac direction?

This thread is useless without clips!

 :D

I recorded this little diddy years ago using a dimed 50w JMP with Variac at 90v using a slight level boost with a grey DOD overdrive and strat of course...the tubes were melting!

Wow Ant, that tone is awesome. So are you doing any re-biasing to run it at 90V, or anything besides stepping down the voltage? I have a variac, but have been afraid to use it because of conflicting info. I love your playing :inlove:

thanks man. you know honestly, im probably not a very good example of going by the rules according to whats the proper approach because of my wreckless mindset. but i will tell you that i have jjtesla EL 34 power tubes biased to the normal american standard and i was using the variac's ( even at the 85v level) quite a lot and have never had amp problems. I know a lot of people critisize Tesla EL34 Power tubes, but they are IMO, the most durable/reliable EL 34 in the market. On the flip side of that coin, i only use this amp/config when i'm recording and in the past, a few performances so it may differ if your on tour for 30 dates straight.

No not any volume issues. Thats easy to deal with using the Hotplate either attenuating or slaving. Just wanting to take the stress off the power supply from the excess voltage. The higher the line voltage is the higher everything else goes, heater/ plate/ screen etc....and of course to satsify my curiousity. :)

Thanks for the info on the sc's. I've never messed with them much, so i wondered if guys use the bridge pickup alot. Do you use it for rock rhythm stuff or still mostly neck?

George, the Wizards sound awesome when the wall voltage drifts upwards to 127 V
Its like adding 50w of extra headroom

I would never purposely variac to this level, but I measured the voltage on a particularly good sounding day and thats where it was.

A good, but maybe not so safe, trick to bringing the voltage down without a variac, is to plug in an old iron or another power sucking device into the same outlet the amp is plugged into. That'll bring down the voltage.

The Wizards sound fine with the current wall voltage. They always sound great.

That would create a nice myth...."that's my magic iron, don't touch it, don't even look at it!!"

More headroom would be nice. ;) :)

Gotcha. most definitely for rhythms i use the bridge sc ( unless its like a bluesy tune) and i switch back and forth between neck/bridge in solo'ing...constantly actually. Actually now that i heard this clip again, i am switching to the bridge pu in that little tap section.
