I've always wondered if the dudes who own sonic maximizers for their guitar rigs even know what a sonic maximizer does.

In a guitar rig, it is nothing more than an overpriced 2 band EQ pedal.

yeah
if you're going to use one, get the behringer ultrafex2

at least it has the surround processor so if you run 2 cabs stereo, it'll sound HUGE if you're the only guitarist in your band, or if you're a basement hero......

i ran that thing for YEARS in a solid state rig as the only guitarist in my one band....but, when we had 2 guitarists, i didnt use it at all as my sound dissapeard immediately.

then i had a "tonal" awakening and got rid of all that shit and got wayy into tubes and amps and such.

I mean I got compliments on my rig all the time. I first heard a SM from a guy in a christian death metal band, and he had a rackmount samson 700 watt going through a half stack, and it just ROARED, never heard a halfstack sound like that. I asked him where he got his sound from he said the SM. So i bought one off ebay and never went back. To my ears it sounds better than the amp on the dist channel.

I will be buying an eq pedal, prob the boss ge 7 so ill have both but i cant experiment with tone cuz im in the middle of revamping my pedalboard and my pedalboard looks like a minefield

Im also running it through a marshall mode 4, i heard your not supposed to use hi gain pedals with marshals. But I want to get a dual rec

isn't the mode 4 the one with preamp tubes, but solid state power?

that's probably why it fixes things up soundwise for you.

put a maximizer through true tube amp and things start to go downhill quick.

but, you're still in "solid state" mode..which is fine for you. most of the guys here have never been in, or have moved beyond that type of gear to all tube gear. maybe someday you'll have a tonal awakening too...i know for years, yeah, i had MY sounds...but couldn't figure out why it wasn't as good sounding to my ears as a lot of other guys that were using tube amps. if you dont', and you're fine with using what you use, then that's fine too.

but you DID ask LOL!

I placed mine in the local paper about 20 years ago and never looked back. :)

I had a SM with my Dual recto as well. The Graphic EQ pedal sounds 10 times better. I got the Boss GE7.
You wont regret. ;)

Yes....the GE7 will replace the Sonic maximizer.
Big difference.

John, is that a sonic maximizer in your thong or are you just really really happy to see me?

I absolutely hate those things. At least in a guitar rig. Never tried one in anything else.

Still trying to wrap my head around this one.
Mids are a guitarists best friend IME. Apparently YMMV.

It may not sound like mids are your friends, but the fact of the matter is in a band mix you better have them or you will not cut.

Almost every guitarist goes through these things at one point or another.

i agree. when i first started out in the 80's, the easiest way to get the "heavy" tone was to cut the mids. then the sonic maximizer came out, and we all added that to the amp...at least for a while. mind you, i am talking about a bunch of kids with no knowledge of what we were doing, just trying to get that heavy tone with cheap gear.

needless to say, it sounded great at home in the living room by ourselves, but when you went to see bands live that did it, it was another story. Exorder were the BBE sonic maximizer kings.

now days, the the gear is much better. if i have to put something in the loop to work the tone, it's a mxr 10 band, barely bumped. but mids are your friends for sure when it comes to cutting though the mix. learn to live with them, and as time goes on you will never believe how you lived without them.

Thats just something I did because it sounded good to my ears. I didnt just open a magazine or overhear a conversation from some noob saying cut my mids
