I wish I could afford the AxeFx but I can't right now. I have a modded Plexi that doesn't lend itself to my current gig so I'm going the modeling route. I will be running it through an ART Sla2 on Randall KHX cab not FOH. Most of the PA's suck in the bars that I play in.

I would grab:
1.) a decent, reasonably priced 1U tube preamp (e.g., ADA MP-1, Marshall JMP-1, Rocktron Piranha, Engl e530, etc.),
2.) an inexpensive 1U FX processor (e.g., Rocktron Intellifix/Replifex/Expression, TC G-Major 2, Digitech 1101, etc.) and
3.) a 1U power conditioner
and stick them in a 4 space rack with your ART power amp.

The Digitech 1101 could be a good option as the FX processor, as it would double as a back-up preamp if the tube one goes down at a gig.

That's what I would do in your situation. YMMV. ;)

More than I can spend.

i've had good results with the gsp1101, i have a feeling the tone/feel on the 11rack would be better, but would also explain the price difference

I can get either for about the same price.

The cheapest I've ever seen an Ultra go for is around $1150, but they regularly sell between $1300-$1450

Honestly, you could just use the modeler in the GSP and get just as good as tones as some of those mentioned above in 1. (not familiar with the). The models arent bad if you take the time to dial them in. And the Digitech is easy.

all that shit together is more than the Axe fx....

11r ,I had the 1101 and the 11r to me is way better on all levels..

Check out the Zoom G3...pretty much all I use now, and this coming from a guy that just sold his Axe II and has a 11R...

I have experience with both. I had the 11Rack and now have the GSP1101.

I think you are set with both to be honest. There's a couple of reasons why the GSP suits MY needs better, the main one is I go direct to FOH at the same time I go to my 1960 through a Velocity 300. In the GSP you can turn off the cab sims from the line outs and leave them on in the XLR outs which you can't do with the 11R. That and the small but audible lag when changing presets made me sell the 11R to be honest.

I haven't tweaked the GSP that much yet compared to the tweaking I did with the 11R but I think the difference in toanz is next to none. Both units are very easy to tweak.

FWIW I did almost all the guitars on our last album with the 11R and am pretty happy with the end result if that's saying anything...didn't have the GSP then though.

So I'd say whichever you decide is good from my POV :).
