I built lots of mutts and clones over the years. I sold most of my original Charvels in the late 90's when their price shot up and I realized I had my dream car hanging on the wall unplayed in my studio. I kept my favorite two Charvels. Then I built Warmoth's, USACG's and Musikraft clones in an attempt to get that Charvel vibe at a more affordable cost.

What I got tired of with building parts guitars is the total crapshoot as far as tone. I ordered the same body wood at the exact same weight and either ended up with a turd or a killer guitar. There was no rhyme or reason to it. Plus they always cost about $1k to put togethere then if I didn't like it, it could be perfect and it was only worth $500.

Then Charvel came out with the USA Production series and I am totally done with piecing together parts guitars in an attempt to replicate my old Charvels. I play the new ones from the wall and I KNOW if I'm getting a great sounding guitar immediately. And if I ever were to sell them. I lose a couple hundred bucks, not 50%. Old Charvels and new Charvels.

Killer collection Chubtone, but now you've got me seriously reconsidering trying a Musikraft neck... That's unfortunate, the "hump" experience you describe...I had high hopes after getting that body...the quality of that seems easily on a par with my Warmoth bodies, but Musikraft is more Charvel-accurate, especially these days.

Funny thing about Warmoth necks, they used to be waaay closer visually to Charvel necks in as far as having the squared fretboard at the 22nd fret, etc - but then a few years back they decided to go more Fender-accurate. They'll still DO a neck like their old ones for you, but there's a few upcharges...

Tons of people have had great luck with the Musikraft stuff including many people here.

So I gave Musikraft another chance. I bought a late 70's ash Charvel body on ebay. Totally beat and just cool as heck looking. Ordered a Musikraft Charvel 1-piece maple strat head style neck. Put it together. The guitar sounded like a mud bomb. With an ash body! I started changing pickups and swapping magnets like a madman. This guitar was so cool looking that I was determined to make it work. FINALLY, I gave up on it. The body OBVIOUSLY sounded like crap so I sold it on ebay. And that old Charvel that I tried to put the warped Musikraft neck on got the new Musikraft neck from this brown guitar. But guess what? All of a sudden, my favorite guitar that I had played for 24 years sounded like a total mud bomb. I don't know how or why this is possible, but that was the worst sounding neck I had ever experienced. I had never experienced a neck completely ruining the way a killer guitar sounded before or since. So yeah, I am DONE with Musikraft. I know others have had good luck with them but I am done. And the worst, I sold this killer old ugly brown ash Charvel body because the neck was a turd.

I guess I learned the opposite way. Have put some good necks on different shit bodies and they still sounded useable if not good.

Did one swap between two alder bodies and the tone pretty much stayed the same for each neck, that was kinda weird.

I have never bought a musikraft, USACG is too good to look elsewhere.

I'm getting ready to do a Warmoth strat build, I don't have the tools to cut a body from scratch otherwise I would attempt it. My only set back to starting so far is the neck. I want to do a stylized x shape for the inlays on a compound radius neck, but don't quite know how to proceed on that yet. Also I want to experiment with Bareknuckle pickups with this guitar. I'm gonna go ahead and order the body next month. Will post pics with progress...

Anyways, theres a bunch of cool guitars posted here that are right up my alley as far as features.
